It’s the sort of magic item you find but never really wanted.
What? Why would you NOT want a robot crab? I mean, it is probably not on the top of anyone's wishlist, but I would not say no if I found one! There is no attunement requirement, and you can sleep, travel, and store some stuff in it.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

I believe it’s an Apparatus of Kwalish.

"Wonderous Item" is typically defined as "any magic item that's not a weapon, armor, ring, potion, scroll, wand, rod, or staff."
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
It's the official art with the detail removed.
