Short backstory, my players are currently level 6, and have just killed a roc. Our rogue rolled well on harvesting the beast, and got 4 roc talons. He then asked if, they can be used for weapon crafting? And said, “yea of course, maybe try to find a weapon smith in the next town”. He likes daggers, so my question is
any good ideas for existing daggers or custom ones, that can be made from Roc talons?
Rocs don’t have any special properties that would make this easy, so I see 3 options. 1. They get mundane daggers made from roc talons, which don’t do anything special, but they do look really cool.
2. They can be +1 daggers easy enough.
3. the crafter in town says they will make an excellent blade, but to make something really special, they’ll also need another ingredient. And that ingredient will depend on what the player is going for. If they want to add fire damage, they’ll need skin from a salamander, or poison a poison sac from some kind of poisonous creature, etc.
Also, I don’t think I’d allow all 4 to be made magic, that’s a lot weapons on one character. Maybe the smith needs to kind of break them up for parts and put them back together again to make it work, and in the process, 3 of the 4 will be destroyed, but they’ll still end up with one really sweet weapon.
Also, I’d say these options aren’t mutually exclusive. Like the smith can make the +1 dagger, and if the party should ever come across those venom sacs, the smith can add that effect later. This might be better, as it will allow the weapons to grow with the character — you place the creature with the venom, or whatever, when you think it’s appropriate for the character to have some slightly better weapons.
Also, this may go without saying, but if you do allow magic daggers, be sure to deduct them from some other treasure hoarde somewhere.
I'm sure someone with proper weapons knowledge could explain how that's totally not a machete - but how is that not a machete? =)
Now - if you'd said a karambit (which is totally something I let GPT find out for me), I'd be 100% onboard.

OP asked for a dagger, which is a small piercing weapon. Coutelas was a dagger back in AD&D 2nd edition. In french at least, not sure if in english it's not exactly the same though.
I really like your third idea, I think I'll spin it a bit and make it a good side mission for him and the team. Might try and make it, so he can advance them, and add to them overtime as they level up. Thank you!
If you're wanting a cool weapon, maybe have some innate magic that the Roc's talons will naturally try to close, making a pair of daggers where if you succeed on an attack with one, provided you leave it embedded, then you have advantage with the other? Or that they have 4, which isn't that bad, and for each dagger after the first embedded in the target, it deals 1d4 piercing damage as the talons close?
If the rogue likes thrown weapons, they may love this!

If OP wanted a small slashing weapon like a sickle, then Karambit would work great i agree. Or a kukri also.
All true, and the image you linked is nowhere near as machete as the ones I found by just googling the name. But .. a talon, which is curved, would be rather difficult to turn into a straight-blade dagger .. although I guess you're right, a dagger is what was asked for =)

Think kuckri the curved Indian dagger. A roc’s talons would be highly curved like an eagle or hawk’s but something like a sickle or kuckri seems reasonable. I wouldn’t have them be magic but would accept them being “ master craft weapons capable of being enhanced magically once the proper ingredients ( and levels) are reached. For this I would take from the bastion rules where facilities capable of crafting common and uncommon armaments are gained at L9.
The Rare Dragontooth Dagger from Tyranny of Dragons tends to be my go to for a quick monster based weapon. Does a nice bonus amount of damage without being too over powered and can easily be redressed as various monster claws or teeth

DM could rule the talon of a Gargantuan size Rock can be crafted into a dagger-sized weapon with a straight or curved blade. The latter fits well a Karambit i must agree.

Or it could be straightened by some technique, or by magic =)

First of all: Rocs are huge. Unless you remove a very small part of the talon, it's not going to function as a dagger. I think a War Pick would be a better estimate of a Roc talon.
Second of all: It doesn't need any special properties, other than maybe Advantage on Charisma (Persuasion or Intimidation) checks against people who have encountered a Roc before.

Correction; a roc is not Huge, it's Guargantuan but otherwise agree war pick could make for good candidate.

Just as one can make more than one thing from, say, a tree, one could make more than one thing from any give Roc talon. As Rocs are gargantuan, could likely make several war picks, with spare material for several daggers.
As for 'need,' that is a strong word. However, it is a CR 11 creature, so it is a viable ingredient for rare quality items, so a 'special quality' or two is not that out of line.

Wow - you could make swords from it's talons. According to the GPT, a roc's talons would be 5-7 feet long. A dagger fit for a titan! =D

Need someone with the skill to do it. Also after a couple of uses they may become unusable due to wear and tear.

It wouldn't necessarily need a smith if you allow the character to crudely craft it like a coutelas.
It could work as a dagger with the property to bypass resistance to nonmagical piercing damage or function as Vicious Weapon for example.
