I heard that there were races like Lizard Folk and Half dragons but have found that these seem to be "home-brew" races. for a new player, does that mean that i cant go with one of these two races as my first choice or are these widely excepted in most groups? originally when i heard about possible being able to be a half dragon i got the idea of having my father as a blue dragon and mother actually as a steel dragon. the idea was that one day i could (out side of the game and in my own "lore") become a true dragon. (because dragons are cool.) but if this half dragon isnt widely excepted than id rather just go with something else. (maybe the dragon born.) any info or feed back would be great. also if the half dragon is an acceptable race what are the rules for it?
Lizard folk are an official race and can be found in Volo’s Guide to Monsters (which, despite its name, has a section of new character races as well as monsters).
Half-dragons are—officially—monsters only in 5e. They might have been a playable race in earlier editions. There are, however, Dragonborn which are an official race, in the Players’ Handbook.
As a general rule, if you are creating a character yo hope to use “someday” in “some game,” it is best to stick with official options. That said, some DMs don’t allow all the official races.
If you are playing AL (Adventurer’s LEague) you are required to stick with official races, subclasses, etc.
If you know who your DM will be before you create your character, you can ask the DM what the rules for character creation are in their campaign.
I don't see why you couldn't use a dragonborn's stats and call it a half Dragon. Aside from appearance and lifespan (and darkvision/blindsight) they are similar enough.
