So I grew up on '80s and '90s cartoons but largely keep to current things or retro stuff I missed out on nowadays.
But now that I'm getting full bore back into D&D fandom, I find myself wondering: is the '80s cartoon worth watching? I know there was a complete series boxset years ago cuz I used to see it at Borders all the time...
I know there's a cliff hanger and how stifled '80s toons can be but I'm still curious.
It's better than you'd think, but not as good as you'd hope. Definitely a better version of a D&D story than that God-Awful Dungeons and Dragons movie that came out in... I think the early 2000's? It's fun, but at the end of the day it's still a low-budget adaptation of a popular franchise where the writers clearly weren't familiar with the actual franchise aside from a few names and designs.
I liked it back then when I was younger, watching it as an adult I feel it is a better background noise/filler for when I'm already doing something and just want another thing to glance at occasionally. You know, something you don't truly have to pay attention to all the time? It's a decent show for the time it was created, and like it has been mentioned, much better than that travesty of a movie (and an even worse second movie) that was released. xD
I am so biased by my own nostalgic love for this show as a child back in the 80s that I don't think I could give an objective answer to that question if I wanted to. But I don't want to so I will just say it's definitely worth a watch. Also, just watching the intro, party starts their campaign and DM throws Tiamat at them within seconds then watches while they run away. What a jerk DM!
So kinda like watching the 1980s G1 Transformers cartoon?
Whoa...whoa....whoa, whoa, whoa...That show is still just as good today as it was when it was first released. You watch your mouth!
Transformers, Ninja Turtles, Thunder Cats, X-Men, all of those cartoons are fantastic. The D&D Cartoon is good but I wouldn't neccessarily put it on par with those. It's better than the He-Man and G.I. Joe shows though. Yeesh.

Oh, I know it's good; i've been a TF fan since I was 8. It's just one of those shows where the voice acting makes up for a LOT.
And yet, I can only watch OG He-Man in Spanish and while drunk.
I loved it as a kid. Watched it again several years back and, whilst parts of it are definitely very childish and moralistic in the way some 80s cartoons were, there were also some pretty dramatic moments and character development throughout the season. There were also some nods to a darker backdrop that you only note when you are aware of more of the lore of D&D.
Plus, the cover of the re-release is pretty cool, using the styling of the old D&D Basic Set.

And now you too can play with the amazing art and assets we use in Roll20 for our campaign at Hazel's Emporium
It's fun to watch, but have to understand the time in which it was made.

I wouldn't say it's Transformers good. But definitely Silverhawks good.

I was so disappointed in this show at the time.
