So I have been trying to get into DND for some time, then corona happened. How exactly does online dnd work? Is it easy enough for a first time player? I am so very lost.
Well, first you probably need to find a group of people to play with. The only online games I play in are either 1) play-by-post, which I do NOT recommend for a beginner or 2) with family who are at a distance. Others here routinely play online with strangers/new people and can help you with how to find those kinds of groups.
Ideally, since you are new to the game, you should play with a group that is designed to introduce newbies to the game. This, I think, is especially important for online games.
Once you have found a group, we can help you sort out character and other things.
Roll20.net- I just started playing on it last week, it does take some getting used to and you may or may not have a period of working out some technical issues. But it works and you can look for groups right on the website! If you do that I would let the group know you are new to not only the website but dnd in general and that you will need help getting started. But it is possible you may not enjoy your first experience for whatever reason or might not like the group you joined, don’t let that discourage you from the game, keep trying till you find the right group!
there is also Fantasy Grounds which I hear is good too but I’ve never tried it.
At a very basic level, D&D is a social game, combining story telling with structured make-believe, and works like this:
A few friends get together with some dice, paper, and a few hours to play.
One of them chooses (or is chosen) to be the “Dungeon Master” (or “DM”), who acts like a referee or narrator. This person will be responsible for running the game, and I’ll explain what that means below.
The other people are called “players”, and they use the D&D rules to make up some “characters”. A “character” is like the character of a novel or movie, and represents someone that the player is giving voice to in the game. (By that, I mean the player decides what that character does during the game.)
