I have been challenged by another player to try and figure out his strength stat and I need help. He is a level 5 half-orc (4 level champion fighter and 1 level undying warlock or hexblade). Their charisma is an 18/19 if you are wondering. He once rolled a natural 20 on athletics and got a 28 total. Another time he rolled a crit and said the lowest damage he could do with his mace was 8. The athletics is simple enough to figure out he has a plus +5 strength modifier so it's a 20 right? No. He says it's not a 20. The eight would be -3 (savage attack crit with 1's) then -2 (dueling fighter) and so he has a +3 to strength right? No because when he puts on gauntlets of ogre strength he says "It barely changes" his strength score. But he also said that he was "still a little stronger" than someone wearing it. I know he is purposely trying to throw me off but those rolls are real. I don't know what to do at this point. If you have any thoughts feel free to reply and help me out a little.
"No because when he puts on gauntlets of ogre strength he says "It barely changes" his strength score. But he also said that he was "still a little stronger" than someone wearing it."
> Gaunlets of Ogre Power "barely change" strength (although if his STR is higher, it shouldn't change his stat at all).
> But he's a little stronger than someone wearing it.
Someone wearing it has 19 STR, so he can only have 20 STR if all of your information is true. Or they've filled in their character sheet wrong and put their STR as 21?...
Do you know for certain he has duel wielding? 8-(3*1) suggests +5 as well.
Not dual wielding but he has the fighting style Dueling so he gets +2 on damage rolls when wielding one weapon. And “Gaunlets of Ogre Power "barely change" strength (although if his STR is higher, it shouldn't change his stat at all). But he's a little stronger than someone wearing it.” exactly I am also confused.
To get 28 on nat 20 Athletics, means his strength mod is +5, as his proficiency is +3. I'm unaware of any magic items, class/subclass features or feats that would grant a +1 or +2 to Athletic skill checks for a fighter/warlock. So, either he's miscounted or he's lying.

Well, given 19 or less doesn't match his rolls and 21 is not possible without homebrew: he's lying. At this point, ask him to prove it.

Is it possible he has an 18 STR score? Is it double the dice on a crit?
Regular mace does 1d6 + strength modifier.
So 1 on the dice would be 2(if your doubling dice on a crit)
a 1 on the second dice would be 2 as well for the savage.
So 4 +4(str modifier) = 8
a 19 in STR would still make those numbers the same.
That would make sense but he has savage attacks which makes it *3. Yes damage dice are doubled.
Savage attack only adds 1 extra die.
Savage Attacks
When you score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit.
so 1d6 (mace) + 1d6(savage attacker) + STR modifier.
Hexblade lets you add your CHA modifier instead of STR. (1d6low)x2 + 2 dueling + 4CHA = 8
Athletics of 28-20= 8 natural athletics. If he's 4 levels in fighter, he could have picked up Prodigy feat giving him expertise in athletics doubling +3 to +6, so his Strength could be 14 or 15
Barely changes his strength score. It could be an opinion of his. Nothing changes if his STR is 15 and can already wear plate, STR of 14 wouldn't be able to move at full speed in plate or splint and hexblade deals damage from his CHA modifier.
My guess is he took Prodigy and has a STR of 15.

I'll put here everything I have found out so far (not all of it could be right because I could've missed some things)
Has to be: Warlock (1) (Hexblade?) and Fighter (4) (Champion)
HP: 52
Str: help
Warlock= Cha: 18/19
Warlock= Intelligence: 4-18 (I think he might have said 15?)
Wisdom: 12-13 or 6-7 (if he is prof.)
Dex: 12-13
Con: 14
Hope this helps at least a little

Those are some pretty high stat rolls, regardless of what his strength is. I hope he rolled it in front of the dm.
For sure, my dm has a discord server where we roll our stats

Nohammer, Yes and I’m asking for help on one stat that I have already used all my knowledge to narrow down

I think he's lying to you to play with you.
