My party is currently in a dungeon, a cultist lair to be precise and the first floor was purely RP and we both had loads of fun with it but then they got to the second floor and it devolved into a dungeon crawl with much less RP and I wanna incorporate more RP into the dungeon but I'm unsure how to do that well without ruining the atmosphere with over the top quirky fun characters
If you can add a faction that lives in the lair besides cultists i.e kobolds that broke through a wall or something idk, that adds hugely to the dynamic. I don't like to have lairs with only one faction anymore for that specific reason

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
You could as a DM, RP the lack of RP between the characters. The oppressive weight of being underground has put a pall over the group. Nervousness and trepidation proceed every turn and shadow in the dungeon. You go on with this type of commentary until you have an NPC jump out and scare the BeeGeesus out of them. The NPC can be a Hireling or Sidekick for the party, provided they "save them" from the last encounter enemies before leaving the dungeon.
The idea sounds cool but the party's nearing the end of the dungeon so it would feel pretty rushed
Also most of the cultists are kobolds
You could have just one cultist who is sort of the “black sheep” of the cult and is willing to help the NPCs. A different faction may be a rush job, but a single disgruntled cult member is way easier and very believable.
You could include tidbits of lore for them to find. A cultist's journal, a mad alchemist's notes, a sacred text that one of the party can translate that tells them about the diety, beliefs, or history of the cult. They can find these and they might prompt conversation among the players. Bonus points if it's in character.
