I'm reading some articles online that Wizards of the Coast is going to be changing the rules to remove things like evil orcs, and attribute bonuses and setbacks for character races.
Simple question...Is this true? Is D&D going "woke"?
If you are referring to the new lineage system that allows you to choose your race's ASI, as well as switch out languages, skills, weapon, and tool proficiencies, then yes these optional rules are coming out in the new book. As far as going woke......I see it mores as giving more customization to the players.

I absolutely abhor the reasoning that brought it to us. This completely unfounded assertion that the rules as written promote racism, homophobia, and gender discrimination in the real world. I believe the people complaining about racism in D&D are doing so in bad faith because they're more interested in in-group virtue signaling and outrage pedaling than they are in making a better game.
I love this change, I love the customizability it brings to character races, but I think the excuse to do it was a bit weak. They said it was to promote inclusivity, which I am not convinced it does. It does make every single race in the game as viable as any other at any class, but that doesn't increase out of game inclusivity.
I don't think the rules currently support/promote racism, homophobia, or gender discrimination in D&D 5e, but there have been problematic elements scattered throughout the editions, even some in 5e. Vistani are caricatures of the Romani people, Orcs are described in very similar language to how white supremacists describe BIPOC (almost definitely not done purposefully, but it's problematic, nonetheless), and there are other problematic elements.
I don't think WotC was pressured into doing this, I don't think this is driven by bad faith, but I do think this change is beneficial to the game in whole, no matter the cause of it.

Because RAW the Orc race got an Intelligence penalty, where INT is a crucial stat for wizards and arcane tricksters.

I think within the context of DnD, it is a solution looking for a problem. I'm not against it, I'm just dubious why changing it had to come lumped into this whole discrimination issue, which is being championed as the reason they're making the change.

Because for a number of years now, businesses have been doing the math and deciding that being seen as being vocally opposed to discrimination is a smarter business model than not being seen that way.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
I think it’s wonderful that WotC are doing this. The more they can do the make the game welcoming for everyone the better as far as I’m concerned.
I’m a middle aged straight white man and so have little if any knowledge (let’s be honest I have none) of how it feels to be sidelined and discriminated against. However I’ve played various ‘nerdy’ games for long enough to see that they’re played mainly by people like me.
TTRPGs are better than lots of games in this regard, but there’s little more enriching in life than meeting and interacting with people with completely different life experiences and viewpoints. The more people are welcomed into the game the better it’ll be for us all and the game itself.
And if you insist on playing the game only with the same people you’ve always played with then you’re welcome to play the game only how you want to play it so it’s a win for everyone.
