Hello, Me and my sons are trying to get in to DnD. ( I'm sure that surprising story gets old ) We purchased the essential kit and starter kit and where pleasantly surprised to learn about DnD Beyond as it made building characters a lot easier.
However, after doing some reading I've come to understand if we want to own the physical book copys that they do not come with keys for DnD Beyond ( with the exception of the upcoming Dragonlance bundle ) which gives me pause as to what might be best to conserve money. I do prefer to own a physical copy but I probably can't afford to buy that and digital copy constantly for any content we go to obtain.
My question is, is character building using DnD Beyond restricted to digital content you have purchased on their website? For example, if I want to build somthing out of say spelljammer but don't own the digital book on DnDb can I still use the DnDb site to build characters with content from that series/source? If not, will Dnd beyond character building be limited exclusively to digital purchases i have made?
I really want to enjoy a sub on DnD beyond buts its feeling a mite unfeasible if I have to double purchase everything and I just don't believe in owning a digital version exclusively when physical copy is mine for life.
To have any content here that is not part of the free material (contents of the Basic Rules/SRD and a few other things), you have these options:
1) purchase entire “books” here
2) purchase only those character items you need here (you can purchase à la carte items from books)
3) join a campaign with content sharing, where someone else in the campaign owns the material here. Note, this only helps for access to the text and for characters in that campaign.
4) homebrew the content you want included, but don’t publish it. (Private homebrew is automatically shared with those in campaigns with you)
for more discussion of purchase options, see the Buyers guide linked in my signature.
Also worth noting the Dragonlance book is something of a 'Trial' where if it works well it seems likely that will become a standard option moving forward.
Just a note note on buying the bits you need, anything you spend on it, gets discounted from the overall book. So let's say you buy one race and one class from a book (which costs 29.99), which would cost you $3.98. that book would then cost $26.01 if you wanted to buy the whole book later (you'll only ever spend $29.99 on it, whether you buy it piecemeal or in one go).
