So I have a lvl 10 character (lvl 9 monk/lvl 1 barbarian) and my strength has always happened to be better than my DEX, as D&D Beyond automatically uses the highest stat. My DM is wondering if I am unable to use the monk damage die because I am using strength instead of DEX? Is this the case? If not, would I be able to roll my Monks damage die and add my Barbarian's strength mod when attacking with strength? If I am unable to use strength with Monk hit die, would my unarmed hits only be 1 + 2 STR from raging? I may just end up only using my DEX from now on and forego the added damage from raging as I was wanting to mainly gain the resistance benefits from raging.
Nope. You can freely choose whether to use Dex or Str for your attacks as long as you abide by the Martial Arts requirements, and the monk damage dice have nothing to do with stats.
edit: with regards to the Barbarian part, I assume you mean the bonus damage from Rage? That applies, though technically only when using a weapon - not with unarmed attacks. A lot of DMs (myself included) will houserule that, but strictly speaking that's what the rules say.
I assume he meant “melee”, rather than “martial”. Simple or martial is irrelevant, other than as part of the definition of monk weapons.
Well, yes. That was kinda my point that Martial Weapons wouldn’t count as Monk Weapons, and therefore not use the Martial Arts die. The Quarterstaff does since it is a Monk Weapon. Unless of course you’re a Kensei.
In terms of what is or isn’t a mono weapon, if you are using the alternate/additional class features from Tasha’s you can specify some specific weapons that are different from the default list to count as your monk weapons.

No, if you are using the optional class feature from Tasha’s, you can designate one specific weapon (like a specific Longsword, not all Longswords) to be your one additional weapon that counts for that day. And you already have to be proficient with that weapon too.

You know, I hadn’t really thought about it that way but you are exactly right, it’s that specific weapon. I had just assumed it was all weapons of that type. Guess I should pay more attention

Yes! I forgot to specify that I knew it would only work with my quarterstaff as a martial weapon. Thank you!
A quarterstaff is a simple weapon, not a martial weapon.

The only thing that would affect your martial art die is if you put on armor or use a shield. Then your martial arts feature doesn’t work.
