I will be making a level 20 character for a one shot that will have a lot of roleplay and combat. I want to be a bard plus something else. Either a Lore or Whisper bard and then either an Aberrant Mind sorcerer or a Great Old One warlock. I want to have at least 17 levels of bard so at a key moment I can use true polymorph and turn into an Aboleth.
What are the pros and cons of and the major differences between each combination of at least 17 levels of bard (Lore or Whisper) and 1 to up to 3 levels of either Aberrant Mind sorcerer or a Great Old One warlock?
Well, given that the only thing that you mention wanting to be able to do is turn yourself into an Aboleth, it probably doesn't matter what you choose.
Well, metamagic is a really nice option to have though you do only get d6 as your HP die for those levels. Warlock gives you some Invocations, a bit of diversity for if you want to be melee, have a familiar, get some extra spells, or whatever the amulet does. You also have a d8 HP.
Either subclass gives you some form of telepathy as the only subclass feature you'd get so there really isn't much of a difference there.
I think it will highly depend on what type of bard you do. Whispers bard would probably benefit more from Warlock and Lore bard could go either way. I think it would behoove you to define what sort of playstyle you want your character to have and then choose your primary subclass and then also secondary class accordingly.
Well I would like to go with lore bard, My goal is to be able to hold my own in melee if I have to but to mainly mess up and cripple my foes with spells, dominate feeble mind, maybe attack using invisibility if I can safely get close.
If you have Tasha's you could go either way. Warlock is generally better for melee however in Tasha's Melee sorcerer is something that is possible now especially with quicken spell one of the melee cantrips or transmute spell one of the cantrips.
Personally I think Warlock would be better because it was built to be able to do Melee better.

"Play the game however you want to play the game. After all, your fun doesn't threaten my fun."
Valid point but which combo would you say is best for a level 20 adventure, combat wise?
