Hey I'm trying to think of a homebrew creature or item for my homebrew campaign and it essentially protects the owner from the Dream spell. I'm just worried if a thing like that would be broken.
Because was think like a pendant or a stuffed animal that would manifest a comforting spirit the the dream plane while the user sleeps and acts like a guard animal.
Well, the item wouldn't prevent Dream from being cast, all it would do is put a spirit guide in the dream with them, so I'd say it's not going to be OP. I'd make it uncommon.
If the item does nothing but protect from the dream spell, it isn’t that powerful, especially if it requires attunement. Without attunement, it’s probably a Rare item, and with attunement, it’s probably only Uncommon. Dream is a spell that is fairly unused (in my whole campaign I’m DMing, I’m only going to use it once or twice all the way from level 1 to 14-ish, and I could just target a different person if it doesn’t work the first time). An item that protects against a more common 5th level spell, such as scrying or cone of cold would be stronger and probably more rare.
