I am curious. You see, I have been having an absolutely ball on a Homebrew background. Infact, I've been at it for a little over a week. But I am still very unsure of it. I don't feel ready to submit it, but I was wondering if it were possible to reach out to someone, or people, and kind of just get some feedback on what to ad, or someone to tell me if its good, or just plan garbage?
I can't show it in its entirety, unless I submit it fully. Copy Pasting would leave out all the little things I've tweaked in. Or am I wrong?
I have about 92 of my OWN views on it, just trying to get it flowing right. Now I feel stuck, and I'd be a little embarrassed to just post in here. I'd rather PM it or something.
Can I link it without submitting it? Or can I give someone else access to it?
Or maybe you can just have a general discussion here about what makes a good background, and apply that to your homebrew.
I think making unique backgrounds is very challenging. IMO, a background is less about a specific occupation and more about a character's relationship with society. It is more about lifestyle than vocation. A background should offer a range of unique possibilities as to how that life has shaped a character's outlook on the world and their place in it. The skills, proficiencies and features are the easy part. It is the traits, ideals, bonds and flaws that are the most important, and they should not be treated as an after thought. I think the most important question to ask is how does it differ significantly from the already existing (official) backgrounds? I've thought of making a Philosopher background, but maybe it doesn't differ significantly from the Sage background. How does a Farmer background differ from a Folk Hero background, or a Cook background differ from a Guild Artisan background, other than being more specific examples of those backgrounds? I mean no offense to those who've made backgrounds like these; maybe specific backgrounds are fine in that they offer a more specific set of skills. It is my opinion, though, that a good background should be a springboard for creating a broad range of unique characters and backstories within that framework.
This is the place to post if you want feedback. If you want feedback before submitting, feel free to post it in its entirety and edit the post as you receive feedback. Unfortunately, you can't link to an unpublished homebrew. Don't be intimidated by the forums, I know that for many people, myself included, our questions and criticisms are to help make your stuff as good as it can be.

I want to believe no one here would ever steal any idea posted to make their own version of something and propose it for publish before the original.author does.
Should you be worried anyway, give a general idea here and see what people say based on basic information. Then you can take the comments to further tweak your idea.
