Looking through the many Class and subclass traint, I can see a bunch of stuff that a character would like to have, but they might not want the other traits from the class/subclass.
How would players and DMs out there feel if a new Feat was created that enabled you to duplicate a trait from another class/or subclass PROVIDED:
The Trait was available at or below the level of the character (so a lvl 8 character could take a Trait available at level 8 or below)
The Trait was not already covered by another Feat (so no taking Spell-Casting as a Fighter when the Magic Initiate Feat already exists)
The character taking the Feat/Trait had any other prerequisites for the Trait (you have to be Str 13 to be a Barb so you need Str 13 to take any Barb Traits)
I understand that this would amount to a LOT of 'pick and choose' but Tasha's seems to have opened that gate already IMHO.
You mean like the Eldritch, Metamagic, and Martial Adept, or Fighting, Magic, or Artificer Initiate feats? I guess it would depend on the feature. (Classes/subclasses grant “features,” base/variant/subraces, and backgrounds grant “traits.”)
One key thing to note is that none of those replicate any features that are granted at any level higher than 3rd, and none of them grant the entire feature they represent, only features that offer choices, and only a limited selection. (Except maybe Fighter Initiate, that’s basically the whole feature, but fighting styles are not wholly limited to only the Fighter class, so that’s a little different from the others.)
Personally I would stick to those same limitations of only 1st-3rd level feature, and only a limited selection from features that offer choices so as to not completely replicate the class feature. Remember, Multiclassing imposes some pretty stiff costs in terms of overall power (MC PCs are usually less powerful than single class PCs), if every Variant Human can have Evasion (7th level Rogue/Monk feature) at first level that would start to throw balance and progression out of wack. It would also start to diminish the unique feel each class has.
PS- However, if you feel those feats would not adversely impact games for your table, have at it. (This is Der&Der, we do what we want.)

Believe it or not, the idea that first started me down this road was the Barb train Danger sense. In many ways, the Barb is a better Ranger than the actual Ranger class IMHO. I wanted a way to take this one Trait without having to MC into a Str fighting class for what would likely be a ranged build.
I like your idea of limiting the choices to lvl 1-3. It's cleaner and easier than I suggested.
If there wasn’t a limit on levels, you could just grab things like Paladin Aura of Protection and pick-and-choose the most busted stuff without having to invest a lot of levels. If there is a limit to low level, the vision of mix-and-matching is nicely met by multiclassing, which already works good enough.
I can make a “better Ranger than a Ranger” as a Fighter, Rogue, Bard, Artificer, or Warlock too. Rangers (and Sorcerers) really got hosed this edition. It’s almost as if they wrote the Ranger class, then wrote all the rules on travel, exploration, foraging, and social encounters afterwards and completely forgot that the Ranger class or something so they scrambled to slap something together on the school bus that morning so they at least had something to turn in.

What does everyone else think?
