So one of my players is playing a fighter, with the Archery fighting style. He started of as a longbow Hawkeye-wannabe (sorry if you're reading my dude, you know I love you <3 ), however, due to the party requirements and his own wants changing he's moving more into a mid-line fighter utilising a hand crossbow.
For this he has picked up the crossbow expert feat, and we have shifted a few rules about (really open to homebrew as long as people are having fun and its not super broken) so that he can use some of his maneuvers (battle master) with his hand crossbow. We just hit a level up (level 8 baby!!) and he is asking for a custom feat, something that will allow him to use his hand crossbow for opportunity attacks, kind of like warcaster for casters.
Currently we are thinking of:
-You gain a +5 to intiative roles -When a hostile creature's movement provokes an opportunity attack from you, you can use your reaction to make a hand crossbow attack against the creature, rather than making an opportunity attack.
Originally this was going to be a +1 to initiative but we chatted it out and I was OK to settle high. he's recently asked for a bit more but I am not sure if it's OP so a couple of questions for the wisdom of the crowds:
1) Is the above to OP
2) If not, would adding something along the lines of "If you make an opportunity attack you may disengage as a bonus action on your next turn" be to OP?
Ooo thank you for pointing out this feat, it seems awesome. Have you tried it out at all? Is it too OP? It seems like it does a lot but then again it's pretty situational.
You're right with the battle manoeuvres, there was just one (I forget which, maybe riposte?) he really liked the idea of flavouring so we switched up the ruling slightly.
Yeah, I suppose it is a wee bit overtuned, but I make combat really hard (80% Hard - Deadly+) so it hasn’t been a problem for my table. Making combat harder is easy, it has to be or the game couldn’t handle PC progression.
We've actually gone for a different build, that again is likely overturned. But like you my combats are harder I think. Like they are all in deadly range but tbf the measurements for that don't work for my party due to size (7 PCs). Regardless I normally build it to deadly then throw in a few more mobs and that's normally a decent fight for them.

Thanks in advance!!!
I am a huge fan of this feat created by another user:

(PS- Most of the Battle Master Maneuvers already work with a hand crossbow anyway.)
