I created a magic item ("Custom Item") that's a slight variation of an existing one, and then saved it. In the "add item to inventory" dialog I could find it just fine.
However, then I made some changes to that item. In particular (mostly for testing) I changed its name slightly (let's say "Custom Item X"). However, even after a page reload, I only found "Custom Item". A while later (not sure how long, we were playing at the same time so I didn't really check the clock) when I searched for it again, it showed up.
So my question is: How long is this cached, and is there a way to invalidate this cache? As you can imagine, it's extremely annoying when you have to wait for this cache to expire just to see if the changes you made do what you expect them to do... Would changing the version help here?
Note: This is not a published item. It's just something I created and tried on my own character.
Is it a “Custom Item” or a “Homebrewed Magic Item?” (Custom Items are created directly on a character sheet, homebrewed items are created in the homebrewer.) You’re typing “custom,” but it looks like you’re describing a Homebrew.
after you edit anything on a homebrew you MUST re-save the entire thing using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button under Basic Information or the system won’t pick up your changes. After that it can take up to 20 mins for the caching cycles to clear across the multiple servers. After that, you might need to “wake up” your character sheet so it updates its own cache. Refresh the tab, add inspiration to your character, refresh again, remove the inspiration, refresh one final time.
Homebrew magic item. And I'm pretty sure I saved the main thing.
20 minute caching is terrible when still creating something and trying to figure out how things work... maybe there could be an option to disable the cache temporarily for your own items? Could even be a premium feature, I'd immediately subscribe.
It used to be instant, but to solve a whole shedload of other problems they siloed everything and added a bug scrubber between [SAVE CHANGES] and the character sheets so bad ‘brews won’t crash character sheets anymore. It is what it is.
I think that's reasonable. It could be an opt-in or even a "dev" instance where you can just test stuff (without caching and any breakage not affecting your or your campaign members' real character sheets), and then copy everything to the real one once it's working the way you want.
I’ve been begging DDB to let us “soft publish” our homebrews for over 2 years. 🤷♂️
To be honest, if you’re on when there’s not a lot of site traffic, and when the Devs aren’t doing huge updates right behind the character sheet, most of the time updates push through in, maybe 5 -- 10 minutes at most. (Usually less.) It only takes 20 when the site’s real busy or the Devs are.
