So, I've recently been rewatching Vox Machina, and I had a thought. I know Matt created the Gunslinger subclass with Taliesin, and Percy invented the technology in-game. What if PCs created other EXISTING subclasses.
Examples include:
A goliath stumbles upon an ancient giant's domain, discovering one of their most ancient magics. Runes. This could make a Rune Knight.
A human, disgruntled that only 3 orders of the Blood Hunter exist, sets out to put his alchemy skills to the test. This could make a Mutant.
A half-orc awakens in the middle of a market. She crawls out of a crator, of which he appears to be the creator of. Her father was a magic user. This could make a Wild Magic Sorcerer.
Thoughts? I'd love some feedback on this random concept.
For the examples that he gave, it doesn't seem that those characters where necessarely the first ones to "have that subclass". So...
Man, that's how it works already. You have to flavor how your characters get their class or subclass. It's not much of a "should I let my players do it" choice, as it is a simple background element. And if you really mean that they are the first, well, what difference does it make? It's still a simple element of the character's background and story. If you are okay with that subclass not existing before that point, then there's nothing to say
But just to add, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to play as the very first wild magic sorcerer. You would have to go waaaaaaaaay back to the begginng of the realms. It is not something a character can choose, or create, or research. Sorcery powers are tend to be aquired, or rather discovered, at random. Unless you change that element too. The DM can change and unchange whatever he wants in order for it to fit better in his world

Is there any “rest of the question” in there?

Yes. Sorry I accidentally hit post prematurely.
Not as much a homebrew thing, but you can totally flavor a subclass choice as a PC coming up with it, if it's never been seen before in "your world".
