I wanted to add a mundane way for the party to increase their damage, at the cost of gold. This is what I came up with. Would you buy it? And if so, would it just be "when I have so much cash there's nothing else to spend it on", or earlier than that?
Weapon Enhancement Kit: Costs 50gp, weighs 5 pounds, has 10 uses. Uses expensive oils, special weights, and unusual materials to temporarily increase the damage capability of a weapon.
It takes 10 minutes to apply an enhancement; one can be applied to one melee weapon during a Short Rest for not additional delay. (The enhancement does not work for ranged weapons, but *does* apply to thrown weapons.)
An enhanced weapon inflicts +1 damage, and lasts for 1 encounter (or roughly 5 minutes of an extended engagement). [DM call for long infrequent-attack situations, but it should last at least 10 Attack actions.]
(Originally, it lasted "10 uses", and added 1 damage to any melee attack die that came up max. That was weird, and interacted with Critical Hit rules and Sneak Attack oddly. Then I changed it to adding 1 damage to dice that were minimized, but that was useless to GWM and a "common special material" in my game.)
The cheapest poison is 200gp, inflicts 3d6 damage (10), and lasts for ONE hit. Plus they get a save against it, and some creatures resist poison. And you can potentially hurt yourself applying the poison (DM call).
Plus also... it's POISON! Some cultures view poisons as dishonorable, cowardly, illegal, etc. Very few cultures view a well-sharpened blade as a matter for debate.

Thoughts?
That’s what poisons are for.
