Yo, I am new to DND and am making my first tabletop character, a Aasimar Devotion/Divine Soul Sorcadin. I got an idea where I use my race ability (Necrotic Shroud/Radiant Soul etc) to make a vertical jump(assisted by wings). The jump is just a bit higher than a regular high jump. This would in my mind be a basic movement action and as an attack/spell I would like to charge to an empty space as far as I am high (surrounded by mobs) knocking them prone.
Tbh i have no idea if this is powerful or not but my DM seems to be a bit reluctant to allow this. I would like your opinion and maybe some ways to limit this even more as it already is.
Limitations so far:
Shroud/Soul ability is already once per long rest.
Sorry, I'm really confused how this is supposed to be working. You jump 5 -10 ft upwards then fall forwards 5-10ft and knock prone the 1 or 2 creatures between where you started and where you landed? Or do you mean you fall forwards 5-10ft and knock prone all creatures within 10ft of where you land? Or just the creatures in a 10ft cube in front of where you land?
It's impossible to know how powerful it is without the specifics. It also depends on the "feel" of the game, this proposed power feels very anime, if your DM is going for a gritty realism game even if the mechanics suck they won't necessarily allow it. Also, also, if you are asking for HB with your very first character before you even play the game the DM is probably worried you're going to make more and more demands every session until you have a character that has nothing at all to do with D&D and is stealing the spot light from all the other players. Remember! D&D is a team game, it isn't about you getting to do the most super awesome whoohoo things you can imagine, it's about your party working together!
That said, if I were to design such an ability it would be as such:
While your Radiant Soul/Shroud is active, you can use an action and 20 ft of movement to jump 10ft vertically, provoking opportunity attacks as normal, and land prone 10ft away in an unoccupied space. Creatures no more than 1 size larger than you within 5ft of where you land must succeed on a Strength saving throw vs DC = 8+your strength modifier + your proficiency bonus, on a failed save they take 1d6 bludgeoning damage and fall prone.
If this is your first character my honest advice is to just stick to the stuff in the books and learn the game before attempting to homebrew anything. Once you get the hang of stuff homebrewing gets easier.
