My DM is a bit confused and encouraged me to seek advice here. Basically I want to cast conjure animals and enlarge insect at the same time. I'm aware they both cost concentration. My work around to him was have a potion of growth and potion of giants strength be applied to the bug pet, I asked my DM if I could roll a d20 for how big the bug got with a potion of growth, he said no. I'm looking for my big pet to become man sized with the potion. My DM ruled that I would need to enchant the bug for minimum 6months game time before it could grow to my desired size from very small to large with potions.
How do you guys feel about it, is it imbalanced, or can you think of a better way for my dm or myself to handle it. Thanks

I dont think my post was very well worded. I plan to cast conjure animals , and concurrently have my small pet praying mantis turn large via potions to aid in the fight
What is your end goal? Is it to have a permanent giant insect companion creature? If so none of the spells or potions you mention can do that (without significant DM home brew intervention). If that is what you want, then you need to describe exactly what it is and what mechanical benefits/powers you would like the pet to grant. The DM can then work out if that is possible, and what cost must be paid - whether that is quests, skill checks, money or whatever. Would also be good to get the other players on board, so you aren't trying to access some benefit that they don't have.
From the way I see it, a potion of growth doesn't cast giant insect, it casts enlarge/reduce, not really giving the intended outcome. If the point is to have a large insect follow you around, you should go with Regent's suggestions.

I see. I will talk to my dm about creating a giant insect companion instead of trying to use spells to alter a standard size bug to a combatant human size creature. Seems like my best bet.

Is the idea to summon an insect with conjure animals, or is that another spell you want to have going at the same time?
