I was thinking it might make a cool spell which would improve a lack luster class and popularized a lesser used weapon. It is sort of a spin off of Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade which target blades but for artificer because they seem meh in my opinion. Like they sort of fall short with only three sub-classes and all. Maybe it is lame but I just thought I'd toss it out there. The spell:
- Ricochet -
Cantrip
Cast Time: Bonus Action
Range: 60 ft from target
Components: S
Duration: Instantaneous
Upon making an attack with a boomerang yoi may use a bonus action to instruct the boomerang to redirect it's course to make an additional atrack against either the same target or a new target within 60 ft of the original target before the boomerang returns to you at the end of your current turn in combat.
The Artificer now has 4 subclasses. And there are reasons why they don’t publish more of them, they would have to republish the entire class every time they did since it’s not in the PHB.

Oh yeah I see what you're saying. Well, I still think it is a good cantrip. It isn't that much damage boomerangs only do 1d4 so a second 1d4 isn't terrible but at higher levels it can become more lethal if the Caster uses an enchanted boomerang ie infusions....
Idk though... thanks for you insight as to why they haven't expanded the class.
No problemo. It is a cool idea. The only issues I see with your cantrip are:
The boomerang is a very specific weapon, whereas those “blade” Cantrips you’re basing it off of work with any melee weapon, so they’re a little more adaptable to an individual player’s play style. Yours forces them to use a boomerang, even if they don’t wanna.
The boomerang technically isn’t an official weapon in D&D. DDB was forced to create it as a weapon as a workaround to enable them to implement the storm boomerang from the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure, which is the only boomerang that officially exists in D&D.
You could have the cantrip create a mystical weapon with a range of 60 ft. that then strikes an additional target before disappearing. That could be cool.

Hrm, I didn't know it wasn't official. Man, they really took a weed wacker to things didn't they? Sorry, I went from 2nd E ADnD to 3.5e and then to 5e just this last year. It is as drastic a change as getting off THACO.
I like your revision to the spell. I only chose the boomerang because can feel sort of like a grenade which feels more Artificery than daggers. I dunno why but I just picture Artificers using their equipment or throwing out items instead of spell slinging or straight attacking. I know they can do that other stuff. Just in my head I imaging them tossingnout tech.
So, I chose the boomerang but really any thrown weapon would work like darts and even stones that are thrown? I don't want to boost the sling anymore it already has Magic Stone. Hrm, the only thing there is a spear or javelin can be thrown for 1d6 and that can be broken. What do you think?
Keep in mind that, for artificers we’re supposed to think of their spells more as them tossing out tech instead of traditional Spellcasting effects. The henever mine would cast thorn whip for example, it was barbed wire shooting from his crossbow, whenever he would cast Ray of frost it was a freeze ray from the crossbow, stuff like that. Mage hand would be a levitation device like from Star Trek, etc., so you’re not wrong at all, it’s just a reflavoring of their spells that we’re supposed to do for ourselves.
