In trying to create a +2 version of an item I'd previously published at +3, I find the new item gets treated as a new version of the old and not a separate item. How can I prevent this? I'm not starting with the published item's "new version" link, but a "create item" button.
I was able to create and edit a copy that way but, I'm afraid, once I tried to publish it, it became the latest version of what I'd used as a template despite being differently named. I didn't have this issue when creating different versions of items before publishing any of them, but now I'm just wondering how similar can I have the properties on the same base item before it gets assimilated (wrong franchise, I know). Any way to nuke the "new version" tendency for a "discontinued" item?
UPDATE: I was somehow able to get things in a good state by creating items from scratch rather than starting with an existing item as a template. All is well, and thanks for getting me on the right track!

I dont know. Try posting this question in bugs and support.
This is the correct forum for queries about homebrew. :)
When creating new homebrew, if you use the "create new version" link, then the new version, once submitted, will replace the previous homebrew.
To create an entirely separate homebrew that is a variation of the existing one, you should go to the create new homebrew page for the relevant type, like this one for magic items:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew/creations/create-magic-item
Next you select your existing homebrew to use as a template and then hit the CREATE button.
Your new homebrew will be entirely disconnected from the existing homebrew and won't replace it as a new version.
I hope this helps!
