I want to make a homebrew weapon that grants a bonus to attack and damage rolls equal to half the wielder's proficiency bonus. From what I can tell, you can only set the bonus to either a fixed number or bonus dice, but admittedly I tend to go cross-eyed when trying to decipher the various bonuses a homebrew item can grant. Is there a way to do it? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Assuming you're rounding down, this would only kick in every 8 levels, so you might be better off creating 3 different items and swapping them out when the time is right. That would let you update the description and other qualities to correspond with the increases in power.
I.e. Sword of Destiny (Dormant), Sword of Destiny (Activated), Sword of Destiny (Awakened)
I don't do much homebrew, so I can't speak to the proficiency bonus implementation itself.
It’s not possible without creating three separate items the way Memnosyne suggested. First, Magic items are intended to not pull info like that from a PC. Second, if it were possible to code something like that on DDB they wouldn’t have had to make multiple versions just like that to implement the Vestiges of Divergence.

I saw a post on adding snippet codes in your homebrew items. Maybe that would help?
