Why does D&D/WotC have such little love for Water or Ice spells? I'm tired of playing the typical pyromancer caster. I wanna play a water/ice slinger but have a hard time filling out my spells thematically. Why wiz why?
trying checking kobold press' winter magic, deep magic does a decent job filling it out. I know it's not WotC, but least it's something and they tend to do a good job for 3rd party content.
For ice at least it's dead easy; wherever there's a burning effect, consider copying Frostbite instead (enemy gets Disadvantage on next attack) or treat an affected area as difficult terrain or such, just discuss with your DM what seems balanced compared to the fire spell you're copying.

totally agree but we should equal representation across all the elements honestly. Its not going to happen though since they have been very stingy with developing new spells. I am hoping we will see a spell development ruleset at some point rather than just making more spells. Then we can just do what we need to for our tables.
Well it did sound like that WotC is making more winter themed content as part of Icewind Dale, which I'm going to assume means backgrounds, and creatures/monsters, but one can hope for more than just that.

This is really the way to go. It helps to see official spells more as archetypes than as the end-all and be-all of spells.

Meh, I'd rather see more interesting core spell mechanics than a slew of reskinned fireballs, which is why I'm loving the new conjuration template they've adopted. Just my opinion.

If your DM is happy to discuss basic homebrew, then you could also just copy fire spells, change their elemental type and tweak any burning effects; there's actually a topic about doing this with a tutorial and some advice on how to do it.
