So, I'm presently making a sorcerous/warlock alternative to Eldritch knight, granting access to sorcerer and warlock spells as innate magic reliant on Charisma rather than Intelligence, since that's kinda what Eldritch knight screams, already. It doesn't get any pact benefits or anything, nor does it get the ever so lovely Eldritch Invocations, as all of those would tread on the place of both the Eldritch Knight's namesake and of the true Warlock class, so I was aiming to try to give it a bit more of a spell casting focus. As such, it has Instinctive Magic open up at 10th level, giving them access to a handful of 1st level spells that they can cast without expending spell slots, and a variant of the War Magic feature which, rather than giving a bonus action weapon attack, allows replacement of a single attack during the attack action with a cantrip (at 7th level) or a 1st or 2nd level spell (at 15th level).
I intended on these spells to be able to be cast a number of times equal to the fighter's CHA, with the ability to consume multiple uses to cast it at higher levels, potentially allowing them to cast it at up to a 6th level spell (which would only be possible with serious magic items that push CHA to a +6 modifier, the highest I've seen among balanced gameplay homebrews). Now, I've entered the data appropriately, putting minimum charges at 1, maximum at 6, uses based on Attribute set to Charisma, reset on a long rest, spell level 1st, classes Sorcerer/Warlock, and casting ability as CHA. However, it only populates the 1st level spell as an option in the characters' spell listings no matter what spell is chosen, and no matter what level the character is at. At worst, I had expected it to soft cap me at 4th level spells, which would have still been fine, but this has become quite the conundrum.
Is there any working solution to this particular problem?
Also, I attempted to add the screenshots, but it appears to only want to do hyperlinks to online portfolios, and while I still have the screenshots, I don't particularly feel like uploading to another website until its absolutely necessary to show my process.
As for the shameless plug, I've now made at least 1 archetype for every class but paladin and cleric, well over 100 homebrew items and spells, and quite a plethora of other content, ranging from monsters to vehicles, all through D&D beyond. My username is Scaarion, and I aim to create more versatile archetypes, better epic and legendary items, and items worthy of the titles they share their rarity level with by the canon of the D&D multiverse. I'm a veteran forever DM having been a DM for the past 23 years, through many iterations of the game, and am a huge enthusiast of the concept of D&D beyond as a platform. No matter the let downs I've had in the lack of access for homebrew options, the viability of the platform remains a massive plus in my books, and I'm looking to expand the user base of the content I've created, and to see any requests or comments that might be had on the items and features I've produced as an aspiring game maker. I'm more or less using this platform as a means to better verse myself on a very playable system so that when I produce my own, it will not only be distinct from D&D (and thus not a direct threat to Wizards of the Coast enough to be stomped out), but also to prevent my overthinking ass from making an unplayable system. Please, take a gander at my published works, and if you like them, use them!
There’s no way to get the system to upcast those spells without using spell slots. The whole “charges” thing only works on magic items, not subclasses. The player will have to manually check off the addition uses and upcast the spell for themselves by using the dice tray. It just is what it is. Trust me, I wish we could get it to work the way you want, I would love to create some things that work the way you describe, but the system just isn’t designed to allow it since nothing official works that way.
As for your self promotion, I have a suggestion. If you “brows” the public homebrew by searching for your own name, then you can include links to the search results page in your signature here and elsewhere like I did. That way you can self promote with every post you make. Check it out. The fewer steps between your prospective audience and your work, the more likely people are to check it out.
Thank you very much for the detailed response! I appreciate it quite a lot.
Also, I haven't toyed with my profile too much, but that's a very good schema for doing things. I appreciate you Sposta, and have seen your posts elsewhere in the forums. You're a veritable storehouse of knowledge on D&D beyond, and I appreciate your dedication to helping us fellow adventurers and DMs.
