Let me start by being totally honest, here. I've been in three or so campaigns that lasted more than 4 sessions. I've been in several more that never got off the ground and/or lost the DM after a session or two.
I've found that groups that already have a DM are hard to find and fill up fast. So, I thought I'd give being a DM a shot.
I'm a reasonable intelligent person, who enjoys storytelling. I'm also familiar enough with Roll 20, Discord, interface. I've been practicing creating a 'fake game' with one of the free modules to see how to use the pages tokens, etc. Bottom line is that I'm reasonably confident that I can run a game well enough that people who want to have fun can enjoy themselves. My plan is to start with the Lost Mine of Phandelver, since I've played it and am familiar with it already. From there, I'm hoping we can take our characters into a new packaged campaign, and go from there. Who knows maybe this will become a regular group for the next year or longer!
I'm thinking that players who are new(ish) would be a good fit, since we will all need a bit of patience from time to time. That said, I wouldn't pass over people, just because they're not new. This is a 21 and older group, just so we know we're all adults and can act out our characters as such.
Fair warning, if you have really high expectations of what a DM is able to do, I might not be the best fit. Otherwise, if you think you might be interested in a packaged campaign experience where we all work together to have some fun, you can apply by responding to the following, preferably by messaging me directly.
1. The timeslot will be at 7pm to 10pm CST on Thursdays. Can you commit to that time slot outside of unforeseen emergencies? (This is the number one reason I see groups fail is people trying to make a bad-fit time slot happen. Be realistic is all I'm saying.
2. What would you consider the most optimal balance between roleplaying and combat?
3. What do you think makes a person a good (or at least decent) DM?
4. What do you think makes a person a good PC?
5. What kind of character do you think you might want to play?
6.* Are you willing to chip in on Roll20 supplies? I wouldn't be charging for sessions or anything, but I might need some help on getting all the sourcebooks and adventure modules. I'm thinking I'll get some of the materials, and maybe someone could 'gift' the campaign a couple other things... We'll talk more about it if the group gets off the ground.
Thanks for reading, and I hope this is the kind of group that fits your need. I'll leave this open a week, until Oct. 9, and respond to everyone one way or another.
I’ve played in 3 campaigns now. That all have gone past level 6, so we’ve been through many sessions. I’m looking for another campaign to join since my last one ended.
1. I would love to commit to Thursdays at that time but it’s difficult for my job. Would you be open to another day?
2. I like about 60/40 roleplaying/combat.
3. I think a good DM keeps the flow on track and knows how to balance rules and fun.
4. a good PC is someone who knows how to bounce off of others, maintains the storyline, and doesn’t meta. A good PC also knows this is a game to play together rather than against each other.
Howdy, my name is Josh. 1.) Yes. 2.) Roughly 75 RP to 25 combat, but a situational awareness is the key. 3.) Creativity and continuity (I think you'll do great 👍) 4.) I'm not familiar with the term PC. 5.) Half elf, fighter/Archer 6.) I don't think I'll be able to help as of right now.
Hey David, I'm Garrison. I've played in so many games that I've lost count to be honest, but either way I am interested in joining your game!
1) Yes, I can totally play around that time and day, but I am open to any other day since I'm not that busy.
2) I prefer more RP to combat, like 70/30 in favor of RP. But I believe it is dependent on the flow of the game.
3) Patience and creativity. Knowing when to bend rules or being open to ridiculous plans your player may present you.
4) Being willing to work with a party, or bringing something interesting to the table. I've been in too many games were people can't work together or set aside differences to play a game.
5) To be honest, I have no idea, but I am willing to fill whatever the party may be missing. I just really need an idea then I'll snowball with it until that idea is fully realized.
6) I unfortunately do not have a lot of income, but I have a few resources on Beyond that I could share with content sharing. And plan to get a few more books this month.
I had a question, will we be using something like Discord to coordinate things or specifically through Roll20?
Hey David, I'm KD. Nice to meetcha! I've DM'd a quite a few games over the years(including one right now), but have never really been a PC so I'd like to give that a spin.
1) That time slot sounds perfect
2)I'm partial to a 60/40 RP/Combat or a 70/30. As long as there some creative ways to kill skeletons that isn't just hack'n'slash, I'm on board
3)Being quick on their feet and letting players help build the world/relationships through gameplay.
4) Being able to play with the other players and not just next to them. Actually engaging with the world around them and not trying to be on a solo hero quest
5)Would definitely play a ranger, cleric or bard, race not important
6) I could throw some bones your way!
Sounds like this would be a lot of fun, hope this takes off!
Hello, I'm Noble! I have been playing D&D here or there for years, but I am usually the forever DM so I'm looking for a chance to be a player!
1. Time works for me!
2. I would say 60% roleplay 40% combat is what I prefer, but as long as I get to do both, I'm happy.
3. I think the first mark of a good DM is interest in and integration of character backstories. When a DM actually reads the character backstory, it shows. And I love to see nods to a character's story sprinkled into the campaign.
4. Good players contribute their abilities creatively to the group as a whole. The party is a team and each player has unique skills (from spells to weapons to ability scores to ideas) that they should seek to utilize for the better of the party.
5. I currently have two characters I've always wanted to see the light of day - a half-elf storm sorcerer or a goliath oath of the watchers paladin. But I am always down to make a new character to fill whatever the group needs.
6. I don't have much disposable income right now, but I would help out if we are able to split things between us to make it cheaper!
Fingers crossed we can get something going! Thanks :)
Hello David, my name is Sam. I have been in three campaigns with the shortest lasting around 5 months and the longest (and ongoing) being as of this time 4+ years. This is my first post and my job is in writing so I apologize if I am long-winded.
1. I do freelance work from home, and the only thing that ties me up is the odd camping trip starting on a Thursday, but as long as I have cell coverage, notes, and dice I am good on the go. I do have another group that plays Mondays, so that would be out for me.
2. Most of my experience is combat heavy with either a 60/40 or 70/30 in favor of fights, but I am pretty ambivalent. I just enjoy being presented with a scenario and winging it based upon my character's quirks/attributes.
3. Neither being too harsh nor too kind when it comes to checks, rolls, and flexibility. No one is perfect, but a DM with a goal to either hand hold or wipe out their party at every convenience feels like the experience is predetermined. Being open to goofy improvisation is also a plus- if it fits within the rules or is rule-adjacent there are some pretty funny and weird things that can happen. I have noticed that a small whiteboard for things like initiative and current tasks helps.
4. Paying attention is tantamount to being a good PC- our time is valuable and if we are trying to enjoy the game we should be attentive and ready to act. The second most important thing is to stick with the low-key RP elements. If your character is of low intelligence, don't make plays that a smart person would call (if they are, take more detailed notes and act with a big brain). If they aren't dexterous, make sure that they are clumsy and just get a feel for it. That kind of thing. Also, if you think your turn is coming up, have a loosely structured game plan. Don't think for five minutes just to cast a cantrip or attack, and if you have a goofy idea to present to the party, spit it out and see if the DM allows it. Also, min-maxing is pretty lame in a co-operative game- we're here for fun, not for stats.
5. If presented the opportunity there are two types of character that I will always play: a contrarian character (gnome tank, orc caster, halfling warlock) and a party balancer. I really enjoy filling the spot that a party is missing. If the party is lacking in the major areas like tanks, heals, dps, support, or buffs, that is where I would like to fill. I am someone who regularly rolls characters just to enjoy the creation so I have a deep pocket of characters to choose from.
6. My personal responsibilities are rather low as it is just me, my dog, and my immediate family nearby so I am perfectly happy to help buy supplies for the game. I am unfamiliar with Roll20 as most of my experience is with in-person or Discord so I might need some walking through.
I should disclose that I am somewhat shy with new people (but for some reason in my current campaign I seem to be the face- D&D brings us out of our shells sometimes), I am pretty foul-mouthed, and I am prone to tying in any character I roll with a figure from movies or TV, so you're more likely to see me run a character named Walter White than a character named Boldric Thunderfist. Typing this out feels a lot like the guild applications I used to make back in the day for WoW
Some extra exposition I should add - I am 34, I love Dimension 20 and Nerd Poker but understand that we are not working with pro comedians and actors. I am a boozehound but in DnD I do not overdo it during game time. Also, the main reason I want to fill absent roles is I want to avoid stepping on other PC toes. I like warlocks but in my other game we have one already so I don't want to compete with him on whomever has the best eldritch blasts so I am running a wizard named Steve Zissou
Played D&D, then Advanced D&D staring in 1983-84. Played a LOT until 1992. Been tangentially involved since then, but a sideline person. Played a little in both college and university but left the groups when I left the institutions.
I write creatively as a hobby. I advise other GM's and players on games. I've been too chicken to join a real game in a very long time. Thinking online and (at first) anonymous is the way to break in. Will play (and roleplay) anything the party needs. Will submit a few character drafts and see if any strike a chord. I'll write new ideas until one works for both the party and DM.
I don't do voices. You'll have to deal with my natural voice or a tonal version thereof.
I've played and DM'd with every possible blend of combat/roleplay, though I admit most of my time has been spent in combat-heavy, Monty Hall games. (Yep, 100% old enough to make a Monty Hall reference.)
I can promise to bring to the group whatever they tell me they need. Want a dynamic, alpha leader? I got you. Want a "sit at the back, answers only when called upon voice"? I got you.
I've been playing WH40K and other tabletops just to get my roleplaying fix. I need an outlet for really drives me.
I DO, very much, drink a lot of red wine. If you need a sober gamer, I can and will comply. If you'll accept a little... variability... I'd appreciate. If I EVER get out of line, sanction me or remove me. I know who I am and I'm not posting any false sales pitches. I like my fantasy (and my tabletop wargaming... and my Game of Thrones and my Black Sails) with a couple of flagons. Heck, I'm four bottle of Amarone in right now... which gives me the courage to reach out like this. In my "real life", I'm a bit of a boss. Asking people I don't know for a chance to act and roll dice with them... well... not as "boss".
Haven't played 5e yet, but have read the rules (own Players Handbook, DM's Guide, Starter Set and 9 other books. Several are Modules (which I promise I have not read -- and will willingly surrender to the DM in order to prevent any conflicts). Just saying I love the game. Did run a fun game of "Pathfinder: Kingmaker" at the same time several friends ran it. We had a blast. None of us liked the sequel.
Found this forum tonight via the "How To Find A D&D Game" post that I googled.
Whether you'll have me or not, I'd greatly appreciate you letting me know. (Perhaps I've over-shared).
Will gladly throw in $$$... a resource I will gladly trade for something worth a great deal more. I can go to a 9-5 and bring home scratch -- can't say the same about a D&D group.
Holy shit, are you my twin or something? I literally found this via a "how to find people to play D&D with", hate doing character voices, drink like a fish, enjoy combat heavy XP, and love filling unfulfilled roles. If we never speak again it is nice to see a like-minded individual. Bonus points if you have read the Wheel of Time, Dresden Files, or Longmire series.
Just posting to say that were I not already committed on Thursday evenings, I would be all over this thread. The folks responding sound like the sorts of players I would want to play with.
Bookworm, martial artist, repentant psychic, dried out drug addict, paramedic, pseudo-apostate libertarian, debater, knife maker, SCA basher, professional gamer, speculator, pornographer, and nascent social commentator. ...and I want an uncomplicated life.
2. I think the 60-40 range leaning towards rp will always be pretty optimal but I don't mind combat so long as we're doing meaningful things in-between, be it narrative or character-based rp.
3. I think a good DM probably tries to prepare for a session and can adjust alright if things take a turn from prepared material. They take an interest in the characters participating in the world and try to work in themes that might interest or challenge them. Being open and communicative is also super important.
4. A good player goes into a game with an idea of who their character is but is excited to see who their character can be. They can separate themself from their character and the other players from their characters, and are looking to make friends. They are also able to step back and let other people shine or try to help other characters' stories get told. They don't metagame and don't try to argue their way with the DM. ...And they are open and communicative.
5. My favorite part of DnD is probably the character creation. I love making a character to fit a role needed by the DM, the party, or that makes sense in the world or potential themes of the campaign. If that's not helpful, I can say for certain I have no interest in playing a human/half-elf/elf. If you want to discuss character stuff on discord I am happy to pull out an existing character concept or make a new one unique to the campaign always.
6.* I'm always happy to help with the campaign - I have some resources I can share as well as all of the sourcebooks on dndbeyond and the heroic tier so I can give access to a campaign hosted on ddbeyond.

I play less dnd than I'd like and listen to more dnd than I should.
Hey man i would love to be apart of this i am new to dnd only experience is from podcasts and shows i've listen to or watched so i think it would be great to like join in a group and all grow and learn together.
1. The timeslot will be at 7pm to 10pm CST on Thursdays. Can you commit to that time slot outside of unforeseen emergencies? (This is the number one reason I see groups fail is people trying to make a bad-fit time slot happen. Be realistic is all I'm saying.
1a.7pm cst is 5pm for me and i get off of work around 3 so i deff would be able to make it and it wouldn't go on too late for me either so actually its perfect.
2. What would you consider the most optimal balance between roleplaying and combat?
2a. i dont have any like sort of reference besides the stuff i listen to and they probably have a rp 80 and combat 20 but i would probably be more comfy with 5050 or 65rp 35combat
3. What do you think makes a person a good (or at least decent) DM?
3a. i guess one one who is able to think on the spot because no mater how good you are at story telling the people in the story are people and they will do stupid stuff sometimes and if you're able to roll with it and then make the story better because of it that would be amazing
4. What do you think makes a person a good PC?
4a.a good player i guess someone who as a actual character and can play them but can also chance within the story over time maybe
5. What kind of character do you think you might want to play?
5a.i liked the idea of a warlock or bard that is a prankster or just does some goofs sometimes but generally is a good guy
6a.yeah i dont mind helping the group out i dont really know what stuff you'll need exactly but once we start talking we can see whats up
Wow, what a response! I guess there are quite a few people interested in this. At this time, I have more than enough responses to form a party, so I'll go through and send out some invites, discord info, probably Sunday as I'll be out of town until then. I'm thinking that going with 6 for the party, so we'll be okay if one or two bails out, and if not, then 6 will still work with a minimal adjustments for encounters.
From there we'll set up a start date, session 0, put everything together and hopefully get to playing in the next two weeks or so. I'm excited. I'll talk to you soon.

Hello to all.
Here's a long backstory. Buckle up.

Well, if I don't get in, I hope they take you.
Thanks brother. Currently in a little deep dive on some great songs and another bottle o' red.
No lies I would like to be in a party with you
Just posting to say that were I not already committed on Thursday evenings, I would be all over this thread. The folks responding sound like the sorts of players I would want to play with.

Hello,
I've never played before tbh, so im interested ig.
1. I can do 7-10pm Thursdays for sure!
6a.yeah i dont mind helping the group out i dont really know what stuff you'll need exactly but once we start talking we can see whats up
discord - "day day#7829"
Wow, what a response!
