I started in an adventure league at my FLGS, Monk 1st level so far, Idea behind him is a rogue that left that lifestyle and found himself in a monastery studying alongside monks, finding peace within himself and forgiveness for his past transgressions. only to find himself brought face to face with his past on his first trip back to his home village. some people can really hold a grudge. Especially the barbarian troupe who controls the trade routes through his home forest which he used to steal from, being forced into his old life of thievery and cons to the benefit of this group. Fiven must fight his inner demons and conscience to fend off his old ways and continue down his new life path all while trying to stay alive amongst the barbarian camp.
I'm looking to expand on this with some multiclassing but ultimately looking to join a consistent group and a DM that would allow me to have some rogue abilities but focused more on the Monk class.
Shadow Monk + Assassin Rogue is brutal. Sneak attack every turn, stun strikes too, high mobility...
Ideally at least 12 levels Shadow Monk and 4 Rogue. You won't lose any Ability Score Increases (although it may take longer), the shadow monk can teleport in shadow as a bonus and get advantage on next attack they make when they do. A Shadow Monk at level 11 can use an action to turn invisible in darkness and this is permanent as long as they stay in such. So, get in shadow, hide and go invisible and sneak and shadow-teleport to an unaware enemy and attack - they'll be surprised and you have advantage and as an assassin this means auto-crit on hit to roll all damage die twice including sneak attack. That's a lot of damage. Stun strike after attack and If they fail that's another attack (monk extra attack) as bonus. Not enough? They're stunned until end of your next turn, so on your next turn two main attacks flurry of blows that's 4 attacks all with advantage and nothing stops you using a stun strike again to see if you can maintain the stun lock. If they're still alive, which is doubtful.
If you look at the monk class, you'll notice that their action economy has plenty ways to get used. Reaction => Deflect Missiles, Slow Fall. Bonus => Ki Abilities, Martial Arts
3 level dip into Rogue offers great ways to add some passive features. Sneak attack on top of your damage. Cunning action lets you save some of your Ki points. Assassinate + Alert feature is a commonly discussed combo. I like Inquisitor dip for their exploration / social interaction applications. Arcane trickster can do magic.
