I am often prone to very random thoughts, which I usually keep to myself. I made this thread to see how many people have similar random trails of thought.
To start us off: I just spent a few minutes feeling profoundly uncomfortable at the idea our model of the solar system could be upside-down, with the north pole at the "bottom" of the earth as it rotates around the sun and the south pole on "top" (barring the angle of inclination). I can't picture the solar system with the earth "upside down" without feeling uncomfortable about it, despite there being no "up" in space!
Alright... What are words? We write or say something and someone understands us? I make a noise that's spelled out Hello and someone responds with a noise of their own and that's considered language? Who came up with words anyway? Or Language? And how was it taught?

Language? Well, all creatures communicate one way or another. Words? That's just humans being weird, though it could have been used as a way to mark territory.

I'm even more confused. Why can we understand what some sounds mean but not others?
Well, my view on it (which is all self derived and not at all based on research) is that verbal language originates from humankinds ability to imitate other animals. We started by copying other animals in their sounds. Then we found we could communicate through gestures and imitated sounds where to find certain animals, or even stories about them. As this developed, we may have imitated the sound of walking to indicate a journey, the sound of water to indicate a river, the sound of crunching pebbles to indicate a beach.
This ultimately took a leap somewhere to specific sounds meaning specific things. It likely started with onomatopes (words which sound like what they are. Like toot sweets.). A good example is the english bird the Chiff Chaff. Their call is "chiffchaffchiffchaffchiffchaff (ad infinetum)". The early humans might have started by imitating the call, then shortening the call to speed up talking, to removing any high pitches or musical connotations and simply saying the words "chiff chaff" to mean "the bird which goes "chiffchaff...").
Ultimately, there would be words which some might never have heard the meaning of or seen it - for example, an inland tribe communicating with a coastal tribe might recognize the bird sounds, but be unfamiliar with the "shweeee" sound of the sea. So they would have to learn the meaning of "shweee" through comparisons to lakes and such.
Once people started learning words they hadn't encountered themselves, language would be on its way to starting properly. descriptive words would be needed to understand the meaning of the words you hadn't heard before, and language is born.
Ultimately, the reason we understand what some sounds mean and not others is entirely down to our learning - once you learn the meaning of a word, you know it. It's no different from learning another language. That language doesn't have to be human, either - I spent some time living on a cul-de-sac which backed onto some woodland. It was there I learnt the squirrel word for "Cat". It's a very distinctive noise. There are also cases (I am told by a zookeeper) where ravens and crows (and that type of bird) communicate quite eloquently - if a boy with a blue hat is mean to the crows, they tell other crows that the boy in the blue hat is mean and they will either mob them or avoid them. They have the verbalizations enough to describe people, and presumably places, sounds and such as well. They are well on their way to developing language.

Random thought: why didn’t Eragon give himself and Nasuada and Orrin a ring similar to the one he gave Orik when he became king
Eragon already had Brom's ring and the belt. He didn't need anything else for himself.
