There are words on the first page, written in clean and concise handwriting.

The First Shard is an old man, once a great hero, who sold false advice and rumors to the unwise so he could survive.
The Second Shard is a young girl, who watched her entire town burn to the ground while she stood idle, helpless.
The Third Shard is a prisoner who never had a chance to live their life before they were captured and stolen away.
The Fourth Shard is a being who searched for a truth long forgotten, on a quest for knowledge and purpose.
The Fifth Shard is a crippled poet who shared his hopes and hymns with the world, trying to inspire others to do the great feats that he could not.
The Sixth Shard is a young man who fought valiantly to save his people and his friends from the evil that wished to destroy them all.
The Seventh Shard is a chosen hero, who, wielding a Blade beyond legends, struck down the darkness at the core of a burning kingdom.
The Fourth Shard will be the first to die.

Reuben thinks for a moment. "It sounds important... but nothing."

"It sounds like the start of some kind of dark storybook..."

"Does is have an author or owner written down?" It doesn't as, far as he can tell.

Yuri lies in a grove. The trees cover her in the shade as her body decomposes slowly into flowers around her. They slowly sway but there is no breeze. She appears to have a small but deep stab wound in her neck, just above her collar bone.
