but looking at fred character sheet, it worked well. a bunch of telepathic and illusion spells paired with handaxes and a fine rapier, also high strength. plus thunderwace, greatest combat spell ever.

Characters don't usually die in Taverns, since they're mainly for roleplaying. The fight with the barbarian was an exception. And fights between characters must be agreed on by both parties, and are usually settled in a PM.
Even if Fred does die, there are a number of super OP characters that can resurrect him. I wouldn't sweat it.

No, cause I like my characters relatively low on power. But the captain could, Camil probably could, and other NPCs on the ship could.
