"I'm not telling the story. It's long and was rather traumatizing."
<Fair enough. Would you be interested in my long story though?>
"Sure."
Pch-Ptah takes out a violin and strikes up a slow tune mostly on the D and A strings, keeping the sound solemn yet not grim. <Well, it all starts in the world of Oerth. I don’t know or care who my parents are. My egg was found by svirfneblin in a small pool of warm, fetid Underdark water. They thought it was of some kind of yet-uncharted beastie, and took it back. Unfortunately for everyone involved, I hatched on the way to their town. They didn’t keep me for long, which I didn’t really mind, since thri-kreen mature at around age 2. I had a bow, and that was all I really needed. I managed to make my living hunting critters and foraging. Things were good. But I always wondered if I could find more of my own kind.>
"Wow, quite the journey."
The fiddling becomes a bit happier. <It certainly was. Those were a good few years. And eventually I stumbled across a thri-kreen bivouac. Well, not really stumbled. More beat up several drow to find them. Anyway, as an expatriate (or so one might call it), I needed to prove myself. So I hunted down and tore out the tongue of a quaggoth. After that, I worked as a hunter and brought fresh kills and foraged plants to the bivouac. We moved around, and I got a bit of reputability. O’ course, then I got hooked on mushrooms… but everything was super for a couple seasons…>

<Until the folks started going mad.> The fiddling grows slower and darker. <Thri-kreen don’t sleep, so I bet we’da succumbed faster if we were humans or some such species, but… over time, people started changing. Their carapaces got soft and pale. Their limbs decayed. And they started raving in Deep Speech. At that point, I already had my swarm and a few spells. Figured it was just a disease, and I used magic to keep myself clean, but when I went to investigate… there was an aboleth. Don’t know how I got away, but the bloody thing managed to hit me. Musta still been sleeping, but what it considered a swat at a fly was a lethal chest wound to me.>
