“Would that it were so simple. Unfortunately for cartographers, the layers all exist in the same spatial area, but in different dimensions such that they occupy the same place but don’t directly interact.”
“Demon.” He amends. “But a snake demon. So yes! But no.”
"Ah I see, so it is if they are all on the same plane while alternate dimensions stack on top of each other like the Realms or the Nine Hells. Interesting. What is this all leading to professor?"
His face flashes a look of shock "Y-you're a demon? Are you evil?"
“It is leading to the answer to why necromancy is so important to begin with, and not quite. Perhaps it would help to elaborate on the three layers of the multiverse. The first is the one we occupy now. It contains the Material Plane at the center, which floats in the spanning Astral Plane. On the outer rim of the multiverse, also suspended in the Astral Plane, are the Outer Planes, which are the dominions of gods.” He draws 16 small circles along the edge of the large one, and a slightly larger one at the center.
“That’s like asking if a bird has a beak.”
She copies the drawing, "So this is the plane we all exist on. The Material Plane. I assume there are people outside of gods with access to the other Planes, considering how much information you seem to have on the subject. But we must remain focused, out of the three planes, where did necromancy originate from?"
"Octopuses have beaks and they aren't birds." He says, leaning away.
“Well, before I answer that, it’s best to make sure that you don’t refer to these layers as planes. Terms like ‘dimensions’ work much better. And necromancy originated on this one, the first layer, in the Material Plane. But we shall get to that soon. Thank you for asking questions, by the way. It would be far less effective if you just silently absorbed what I said and never tried to pursue deeper understanding.”
“Yeah but in this scenario you’d be asking if birds had beaks, not if beaks had birds.”
She nods "My first professor did not like me asking questions, inquiring on things they thought were obvious. So I should refer to them as layer or dimensions rather than Planes. Interesting." She scribbles that down onto her notebook "Do you know of whom the first necrotic spell was cast? Or is that lost to time? Or does it not matter, like who used wax for the first candle."
He chuckles at the question "If beaks have birds. Haha." He then realizes he's still in a conversation "Oh, it's worth asking, you never know, especially in this place."
Thirteen smiles. “Sadly, it’s not possible to know, but there actually are several theories on the topic of which necrotic spell was first to be performed. A majority of scholars believe that the first was a revivify spell cast by some kind of priest or religious leader during mortal ur-materiality.”
“Yeah, that’s true.” He concedes.
"Hmm interesting. Revivify would make sense as the first, considering most humans want to overcome death in some way."
He laughs "Do you want to take a seat?"

Shade is sulking in the shadows in the alleyway behind the tavern surrounded by broken bottles
Klei is heading back to the inn, carrying a folding table under one arm and a bag of all kinds of miscellaneous items. He sees Shade. “You okay back there?”
Shade throws a bottle at him flattening her ears
He dodges it. “S-sorry… just trying to be a good citizen.”
Shade sighs. "whats that?"
“Well, I just wanted to make sure you weren’t, like, injured or had just been mugged or something…”

“Yes, and its relative simplicity in terms of magical power and component cost would leave it well-suited for early use by primordial spellcasters. Now, the second layer is considered by some to be just a large Outer Plane, but spatial analysis has resulted in its reclassification circa 1516 DR. This layer consists of the Outlands, which are mutable Material Plane-like realms that lie between the Outer Planes, and at their center erupts a great mountain called the Spire that scrapes the very edge of the multiversal disc.”
“Sure.” He sits down opposite Rowan. “Your mask?”

"Hmm so many things I don't know about. Spells cast by much older casters would be far more dangerous, closer to wild magic users rather than anyone else." She continues writing things down, taking time to look back to the board.
"Yep, but it's more of a being itself." He says with a sigh.

“Yes indeed. Early arcanists were mostly sorcerers of draconic descent, due to residual draconic power from the First World’s collapse. Now, do you know about the city of Sigil?”
“Really?” He pokes the mask curiously.

Hundreds of voices fill his mind in the split second he touches the mask "Yeah really." He shivers.

He shivers a little, looking oddly excited by that. “And it does what?”
