"I am in purgatory right now. I have nowhere else to be. And I am not trying to sell you anything. I was an executioner in life, so I have plenty of money down here. What I know is that if you're seeing me, you shouldn't be. I'm normally only seen by the terminally ill or gravely wounded. You are dancing on a knife's edge, friend. I was just trying to make sure you didn't cut your feet."
<Wait, it’s free?!>
"Of course. What would I even charge you? Rule one of being dead is that you can't bring anything with you. Just your emotional baggage. So, you want the sweetie? You might be rid of me if you take it."
<…sure.> It takes the sweet.
It tastes pretty weird. Not necessarily bad, as it's still a candy, but it still tastes off. It helps a tiny bit. Not much though.
"And behold!" The knight's voice is slightly more distant now. "You are now a modicum less dead."

He wouldn't find out anyway. He was going up, after all. All kids do, and thank goodness for that. But onto your real question: When I was little, my parents were fishers. Thus my last name, Fischer. They never had a lot of money, so when I got old enough I chose the best-paying position I could apply for: executioner."
"We had much, much wealth after that. The job was tough and perilous, and people hated me for it, and I had to travel around looking for work a lot, but in the end, it was worth it.
