The masked man withdraws his hand without any particular worry, although he did flinch at the sudden movement. He reaches into his duffel bag and removes something: a black veil with metal clips on it. He clamps it onto his own hood, then removes his mask, his face remaining hidden. Then he reverses this sequence of actions before folding the veil back up and offering it to the young man by placing it on the table in front of him.
Then, he speaks again. "I'm sorry." Not an apology. Sympathy.
“Don’t be, I chose this, so I have to deal with the downsides.” He says, ignoring the veil, as he doesn't seem to want it, or perhaps doesn’t understand what it’s for.
The rat mask man shakes his head gently. "You were too young to make that kind of decision." He tilts his head. "Who guided you to it?"
“My consciousness, a wise old man, and a magical salmon. I was trapped, and I needed to get away. If I showed my face I would be dragged back to where I left, and punished greatly.”

He bows his head and flexes his fingers. "By whom?" His voice is even softer, laced with a sadness that wasn't there before. The shadows seem to flicker, but the lights themselves remain undisturbed. It's as if the darkness were recoiling from the masked man, anticipating something.

“That’s exactly why I’m wearing a helmet, I don’t want you to know. Besides you wouldn’t know him well, you might just know him by name.”
Despite not seeing his face, you can tell he’s confused by the shadows.

“I don’t need help. I need to get away, I’ll run as far as I can, and I’ll run some more, and more, and more. Then I’ll have time to figure out what to do.”
