In honor of Smaug, my pet python who passed away, I shall gift y'all with some serpent related mythology.
The xicalcoatl is a type of Aztec serpent. It resembles a normal snake during its younger years, but once it reaches maturity, a strange growth appears on its back. It resembles a clay chocolate pot, complete with painted on designs. This snake swims out in the river, submerging its entire body except for its pot growth. That is left above the water. When a passerby passes by, they will see the chocolate pot floating in the water and in an attempt to satisfy their sweet tooth, they will go into the water to retrieve the chocolate pot. They snake will swim just out of reach, drawing them into deeper water, and once they got them where they want them, the serpent thrashes about, creating big waves that drown the target.
The hoop snake is a strange serpent found in Australia, America, and Canada. This creature is one of the many fearsome critters from lumberjack lore. Its main method of movement is to curl into a wheel shape, with its tail grasped in its mouth, and rolls about in this hoop after prey. When it wants to attack something, it flings itself out of this shape and skewers its prey with its sharp, venomous tale. If the hoop snake is after you, it is wisest to take cover behind a tree. When the snake tries to stab you with its tail, it will hit the tree instead, killing it with its venom but giving you time to escape. If the snake is frightened, it does not roll away like a wheel, it instead crawls on its belly like any other serpent.
The zoureg is a dangerous snake from Arabia. It cut through anything like a hot knife through butter, nothing can stop it from passing through whether it be stone, wood, metal, or even a human body. They only way to kill it is by decapitating it in its sleep.
Similar to the zoureg, the omniont from Huron folklore is unstoppable. It will grind its way through anything, buildings, bears, boulders, nothing can stand in its way. A piece of it would make a powerful talisman. It appears to be a snake with some of the features of an armored fish.
Another monstrous serpent from Huron folklore is the angont. It is the source of all diseases, death, and misfortune in the world. It makes its lair in any dark and secluded area. Sorcerers use this snake to bring harm to their enemies. They rub angont flesh with any small item, splinters, leaves, animal claws, etc. These items become cursed with dark magic and they will penetrate deep into the vitals of the victim, all the way down to the bone marrow. There it causes incredible pain, sickness and eventually death. The only way to save the victim is to find and remove the item before it is too late.
Another fearsome critter is the snow snake. It is described as a blue or pink eyed serpent that is only active during the winter months. It is coated in a thick layer of fur that is incredibly good camouflage, making it practically invisible in the snow. It was used as a practical joke to freak out people not accustomed to the wilderness, and any strange markings or patterns in the snow were attributed to it as part of the joke.
These are all that I will post for now, but I may come back and edit this post later, adding more serpents to it in memory of Smaug.

It’s true.
That's what happens with us fey types, we have to create things. Out of darkness, light . . . as they say.

Poetic.
Nah, I stole it from something.

I found it. It's a paraphrase from the vulgate of Job 17:12. Not that I'm necessarily Bible-ey, but it always has some usable quotes.

Still poetic.
