QOTD: Do you represent irl holidays in your campaigns? Like something similar to Christmas around the winters (assuming that there is winter in your worlds)
I would do something similar to Christmas around winter in game, but I wouldn’t make something similar to Valentines around the end of winter.
If I had a game that ran regularly, I would.
I did create a Christmas one-shot that was built off the Christmas Carol. Instead of three spirits visiting them in an attempt to convince the characters to change their ways, the spirits came to kill them and they have to survive the night. I also threw in Krampus who tried to strike deals and bargains with the characters. This year I would like to run a one-shot that uses the Mari-Lwyd.
I would also run games set in a harvest time with spooky elements for Halloween if I could, but we meet so irregularly that we haven’t ever played in October.
Valentines Day has been mentioned. I don’t think I would write a Valentine’s Day adventure because my players and I aren’t interested in playing through serious romance. I might make a quest that involves two lovers, but it probably wouldn’t involve romance with the players.
That’s quite impressive everyone! I am kind of working on my world, but it’s more of brainstorming right now since I don’t feel comfortable running a campaign for it on here, especially with my blatant fear of someone taking what I make and stealing it. I’m not saying any of my players will, just those who may be observing. That’s also a reason why I am running my current campaign in a PM, so it is more private than a thread.
Eventually, I will go and remake Estoria, but currently it’s on hold until I get my [gp] together and focus on more than 2 things at a time.

I really wouldn't worry about people stealing your work. I don't even see why that would be harmful, unless you're somehow trying to make money off of your world. Do you know what they say about imitation?

For reference: I am currently 58, turning 59 in late January. I am from the very first of the Gen X folks in the US (other nations have slightly different periods for GenX designation). I built my first world (map, ornate genealogies, kingdoms, and such) in 1975 -- four years before I found out that D&D existed, lol. I was 10. This version of Wyrlde is the 13th iteration -- the 13th version of it -- and it pulls things from every previous version into it, even though it is otherwise a "new setting".
You got me beat by a few years (53) and I did my first map in the 4th grade after reading The Hobbit. While D&D wasn't out - I was already scribbling all over this map and thinking of stories I'd write. Then I was introduced to D&D... and things got out of control for my imagination.
I made my first map in fifth grade (before I discovered D&D), and started my first 5e adventure at 12. It’s still not done (getting there, though!), and I’ve rewritten it so many times I barely even remember the original. It’s become the Theseus' Paradox of adventures at this point.

I haven’t heard of that imitation thing. I didn’t want to make money with my world, but someone might take it and make money off of it.

“Imitation is flattery.”
And I wouldn’t worry about it. Not a lot of people crawling DDB looking to steal people’s homebrew. It’s your world and your choice, but I’m sure tons of people here would love to see it if you ever want to share :)

Chiming in to say don't stress about stealing as well.
I mean, hell, I put my entire world out there for free for anyone, lol. That link in my signature is the PDF as it develops for the Lore Book, and eventually there will be one for the player's book, as well.
And I am going to post all of it on the website as a whole once I figure out how I want to do it (I have a good idea, lol, it will just take a bit of time).
I don't mind if someone finds something they like and chooses to use it.
I write the book and everything for my players -- in this case, I decided to share it more widely in order to let other folks take it and grow it on their terms. For there to be real money in it, I would need to have some sort of novel that was widely successful, or a comic book, or something like that -- no one is going to just take or steal or even license to use my little world for anything that will actually make money. Settings don't do that (even Video game world builders are low on the totem pole lol).
but I know the world, the people, the places, and the joy is in watching people explore it, roam around in it and poke at it.
Personally, I would get a kick out of someone else taking my world and building their own game around it.

That’s.. interesting. I thought that the links in your sig were for something like DMs guild where you have to pay to use them. I didn’t click on them though since I’m still in school and are broke.
I may share some stuff on my world eventually, but I have to figure out how to make it better than it is now, because I was going to have a civil war happen on top of what is going on with all the gods usurping each other. I also have no idea how to make the latter since I don’t have a way to do research for that kind of thing.
I should probably use a better world builder then Azgaar’s, but hey what I have now is good enough for now.

Don't be afraid to borrow from real life. Doing something with a Civil War? Look up the Civil War that happened in the US - take some of those events, change names, add some magic and there you go. As for Deities usurping one another - you could look at Norse mythology with Loki, or Greek Mythology (and probably any Mythology, really - but those are the two I probably know the best) - even the Forgotten Realms mythology has a lot of betrayal and backstabbing in their lore.
Good idea. i completely forgot about Norse mythology and I may check it out. Although I may have unintentionally made it where a god like Loki does some very similar things as him in order to take another gods place.
I have to go for now, so have a good night everyone!

1) I do worry about idea theft also, probably irrationally though lol. For instance, I nearly didn't explain anything about my labyrinth RPG earlier but I decided to outline it ultimately (somewhere in this thread).
2) I'm a DM a group at my school's RPG elective, so I'll need to have an adventure around one-shot (or maybe a bit longer) length done by next Friday. So my first DMs Guild project will likely come out sooner than previously expected I guess.

That's so absolutely fine. In one of my many revisions as my world grew, most of my gods had a very Norse type feel to them - they sort of evolved into the same types of deities found in an RPG (but I knew them through the CRPG first) called Realms of Arkania (the RPG is called Das Ausage - probably spelling that wrong! - but it translates to "The Dark Eye" from German). I loved the Realms of Arkania series (the original, not so much the recent remakes). I played the series (especially the second one Star Trail more times than I dare count!). As I've played more and more as a DM, the gods have changed to fit what was needed. I am pretty sure somewhere in this thread, I talked about how I felt there were too many gods in my campaign (ones that players just weren't drawn to) - so I had an event where the Spider Queen (essentially my version of the Drow goddess, Lloth) ascended after eons of being banished - and during her ascension she killed eight gods (one for each leg of the Spider Queen). Was a fun way to have an event the players were involved in and clean up some of my own deities and lore. (As a result, two of the slain deities would go on to launch into interesting storylines... so they became more useful to me dead than alive... the god of wisdom ended up creating a relic, foreseeing his own death - and that relic has fallen into the hands... uh, tentacles, uh eye slots of a very evil Beholder who has learned how to attain godhood so there is a party after him... in another game, on a cursed island, the party has noted an increase in ghosts trapped... and learned, with the god of judgement slain, the spirits of the dead are not being judged to see what plane they go to... trapping them on the world as restless spirits...)

How much player engagement went into the development of your setting?
That is, how much of your setting did players have input into the development?
For all of my campaigns, my players barely put anything into it. I’ve had at most 2 things get added to a single campaign because of the players, since most of them have other things to do while I’m working on the campaign. I have had some cool stuff get added, like a whole merchant company one of my player’s characters was in, but the campaign didn’t last too long.
it was my first version of my Estoria campaign, and my players didn’t even get past the starting area before going back to their phones and making excuses not to come. It was partly because it was my first campaign, and I didn’t run a module instead.
My players’ actions in the one campaign I ran contributed to the setting and even changed the world a little, but other than that the setting is all mine.
Oh wait. One of my players made a god for her character which I then incorporated into the setting. So I guess she contributed to the setting by creating that god.
How much player engagement went into the development of your setting?
That is, how much of your setting did players have input into the development?
Some, but most of it is very much mine. One player developed a backstory of being from a witch coven that had been attacked and purged, so I found a good location and tied it in to the larger world. I actually did the most specific worldbuilding for a player that wound up not being able to play, but it at least kickstarted a lot of ideas that had been floating around about mysterious workings of dragons and certain gods.
