She notices a sailboat approaching the Assurance. On board is Alistair Tao, holding a book.
she waves to him
He returns the gesture and boards the ship. “Izzy! I’ve been meaning to speak with you.”
"oh? what can I help you with?"
“You’ve agreed to assist in the war effort, correct?” Alistair sits beside a cannon and opens the book, an intricate atlas with a leather cover.
"yes. I am going to help"
“In that case, it seems a debriefing is in order.” Alistair flips to a bookmarked page and makes a mark in the northern hemisphere. “This here is where the Duchess of Saurridge was last seen. I don’t blame you if you haven’t heard of her — she prefers to keep under the radar, despite being one of the Empire’s driving forces.”
"So, that's where we look?"
“Indeed. The issue, of course, is that this region of Lubridium isn’t very forgiving to boats. It’s bitterly cold and filled to the brim with monstrous arctic predators. Even the submersibles we’ve built will struggle in these conditions, and they’re not the most . . . reliable even in good conditions.”
"well, you've come to the right place. the Assurance was built for arctic weather"
Tao smiles. “I suspect you will prove to very useful in our war effort, Izzy.”
”Very well. Is the Assurance in good condition or will it require some form of maintenance? The Spider Guild has some of the best technology our movement has to offer, but it would be best to predict our problems instead of solving them on the fly.”
"she might need some patching up around the hull"
“Excellent. I’ll get our best people on it.” Tao stands. “That’s all I have for now, unless there’s something more you want to discuss. We’ll set sail one Selene-cycle from now, in thirty days.”
*In IRL time, they’ll head north as soon as Monks’ encounter is resolved.*

Sergei pops belowdecks, holding a mass of parchments. “Cairn, what do you happen to know about the Spider Guild?”
