Mine was kinda similar, but to understand ancient Jeff you have to understand the fundamental structure of clay, especially the colors. So, I studied with a prismatic wall -do NOT reccomend, died far too many times for my liking as I looked closer.

One quick tip, if you are going to use time travel you should go back to the time where ancient Jeff was spoke, then take prehistoric Jeff. This way you'll learn two languages at once, even though you won't understand your teacher... But that isn't much of a change anyways.

What if Jeff's favorite type of clay ISN'T CLAY!
I know I know, sounds crazy, but hear me out. Us feeble mortals all subconsciously follow Jeff in every way! And we turn one type of food into another, for example: I can take a delicious apple and turn it into a apple pie. Therefore, I believe that Jeff's favorite Clay could be partially a subset of clay, such as a delicious clay apple! -Through advanced magically pottery making skills ofc. If this is the case, the possibility could be endless!
