I'm trying to come up with a visual theme for my protagonist to set him apart from the other monster hunters. I want him to be recognizable at a glance. I was thinking "butcher" for his theme for a second, then I realized how... basic that was. And how overdone. And how difficult it would be to make that heroic.
Here's his backstory, basically:
He comes from a carnival which was burned down by the church that took him in as a teenager. They killed his only slightly abusive father with a flamethrower. Speaking of his father, he ran the house of horrors and was in charge of dealing with punks who wanted to pick fights. He would slam the punk around, then rip out at least one tooth with pliers and add it to his taxidermies.
Our protagonist, Austin, was frequently bullied by other kids for his size, which made him eat his feelings, which made him an easier target... anyway, his father wanted him to stand up for himself, damn the other kids' safety. Because Austin was a big kid. He could probably have killed another kid his age at 8 years old. But he didn't.
To this day, Austin fears people, and due to being forced to face his fears while monster hunting (he failed), he quit and got a job as a cook, which is about the first time he's been praised for his cooking. Also the first time he's had regular human interaction in years.
The church didn't treat him well. They thought he was an utterly debauched brute because of his appearance and origins. He's a sad boi, and he will get a lot of comfort as the story goes on.
