YAY! Tw it starts out kinda dark It doesn't have an official name but I've been calling it shepherd and sheep for now. It's set in my fantasy world (called Vitrisata for now) where there are many species of sentient life, but two important(not really) distinct factions. The first, made up of elves, humans, orcs, gnomes, etc, are called the sovereigns. They lay claim on the world and cemented themselves as the dominant caste, towering over those they deemed lower than them: The Otherfolk, people with traits of animals and monsters. In the old days, Otherfolk were either hunted and butchered for their magical components for use in alchemy, the most accessible magic, or treated as a slave caste. Through the years, otherfolk tried to intigrate into society, and some alchemical components were surrendered willingly, substituted, or phased out entirely. However, to this day, some sovereigns still see otherfolk as either dumb animals or terrifying beasts. The dark veins of the alchemical trade still flowed beneath the surface. Whether the sovereigns knew or cared, Otherfolk lived in fear of being killed for the crime of existence. This story begins in a boarding school on the Faorin border. Faor, the hub of the magic trade, has never been kind to otherfolk, including our protagonist. Her name is Merle, and she's an Arius, a breed of otherfolk with the traits of sheeplike creatures. For most of her short life, Merle had been kept in the school as a sort of class pet, forbidden from speaking and generally living separately from the other children, who she was made to watch over despite being still pretty much a child herself. One of the kinder fates for otherfolk in faor, sure, but she wanted more. So one night, she ran away. She'd overheard tales of the land to the south, temarii, a haven for people like her. Using the stars to set herself on the right course, she started running south, sleeping by day and traveling by night. Unfortunately, hunger got the better of her, and while she was climbing a peach tree for the fruit, she fell, gashing her side on a sharp branch. She did her best to pack the wound and travel on, even passing the boundary stones, but eventually, she passed out from infection. Fortune, however, finds the young Arius in the form of a flock of sheep. They crowd around her, drawing their shepherd near, and he carries her to safety. When merle wakes up, that's when we meet our secondary protagonist: Lysander, an elf shepherd. He's kind and concerned, but merle isn't having any of it. But due to her rough condition, she can't exactly keep traveling. What follows is a fantasy slice-of-life found-family story about merle learning to trust again and Lysander learning how to do fathery things. It's one of my favorites cause it's cute and I think it gives ghibli vibes
