I used to think that.
I was about to say something foolish and controversial. I apologize. I am a Christian, so I have fairly restrictive and arbitrary views on religion. I personally believe that belief on its own doesn't make something real. There are a ton of cults out there that believe that their leader is God and they will make some sort of demented version of heaven or something like that, and I don't think believing in that stuff makes it so that you go there when you die.

Honestly to me (as an aeithiest or something like that) the afterlife seems like it should be the least important thing. If you believe in reincarnation, maybe that happens, but if it doesn’t you still did what’s right. Same for Heaven. None of these things can really be proven, so you basically can believe in whatever and hope for it. In my worldview religion is more about the moral code you follow, not where you end up when you die
