Bad power system idea:
Magic is performed by combining one of the three components of Humanity with another. The first is Anima, your mind and soul. The force that makes you, along with all beings who breathe alive. Anima rises and falls with your emotions. The basis for most magic. Fun fact, the reason that only wooden wands and staffs can be used is because of the residual Anima left over from when it was a tree.
The second is Ego, individuality made manifest. Your very own will. People who are sure of themselves and their ideals have more Ego. People who follow others blindly have little Ego. For this reason, it’s not uncommon for talented apprentices to betray, or even kill their masters. Ego is used to fuel and enhance Anima for more powerful magic, and for people to put their own twist on spells.
The last is Pathos. Your experiences, particularly the negative ones. Quite literally suffering in a can. Like Ego, it is typically used to enhance Anima, but it is typically written off, because in order for it to be a viable alternative, you would need to have so little will you have no business practicing magic in the first place, (if you had enough will, you would just use Ego like a normal person) and you would need to be so physically injured that you’d be turned into a fine red mist if someone so much as breathed on you to hard. Not to say it doesn’t have its applications, but it isn’t much good outside of being used near death situations out of pure desperation. Hypothetically, if you were unfathomably apathetic, you could use a combination of Ego and Pathos, but who would ever do that?
