I used to have this dream where I swinging across the Grand Canyon with a grappling hook
halfway through, a "friend" joined me (this was not one of my real friends but rather a manifestation of my dream)
A bit later they miss a grapple and fall to their doom
I, undisturbed by this, kept grappling
soon, I also fell, and the dream ended

Begrieved, Denial Given Life
Life is unfair at times.
We are given family, friends, creatures to bond with. Beings who helped make us who we are. People who we love. And life often takes them away, either at the agonizing pace of a snail or the sudden speed of lightning.
Many accept this absolute truth and live on, holding the dear memories close to their heart. Some turn to others for support. Some sadly turn to a bottle to drown their sorrows. Some isolate themselves, locking their hearts from ever being hurt again.
Then there are Grievers, powerful in soul yet volatile in emotion. They refuse to believe what they have lost.
Denial is a hell of a drug.
They create illusions, false lives, extensions of their souls, nearly perfect mimicries of the departed. They speak like them, joke like them, comfort like them. The lost are returned, at least for a moment.
These illusions should not last forever. A Griever must come to terms with the truth, and bid a final farewell. Only then can they truly be happy, for these illusions wear down the soul overtime. What might seem like a simple set of yawns becomes immense fatigue. a bed-ridden life. comatose, then often death.
The Grievers are not the only who suffer. These illusions fade as time passes, looking less like your lost childhood friend and more like their dark, hazy, disproportionate reflection. They stop acting like your old grey-furred dog and more like a confused creature who only now processes existence.
They stop being illusions, and start being Begrieved, creations of denial that can only blame themselves for their creator's death.
Life is unfair, even to those who never were meant to experience it.
