Strands of shadowy matter are floating a few inches above the ground, in the middle of the arena.

The one-eyed strugel walks over. He sniffs the air, then offers the shadowstuff a strawberry-filled donut with pink frosting and sprinkles.
He's carrying what looks like some sort of advanced arbalest/cannon on his back. It probably weighs more than him.

The tendrils don't seem to move. The strugel can see the faintest outline of a creature on the ground, but it looks ripped apart by a weapon.

He tilts his head, then puts the donut away, reaching into a bag of holding. He reaches around blindly until he suddenly winces in pain, pulling his hand out slowly. There is a golden sewing needle stuck in his paw pad. He plucks it out, a drop of blood beading on the needle, then begins trying to weave the 'threads' together.

"It may seem pretty nasty on the surface, but there really is a lot to discover about this place." He mixes the coffee with vanilla syrup, then adds the milk. "I came here to learn techniques from the martial combatants here. I'm barred from the 'direct use of magic,' which is such a vague concept that it's best for me to avoid it altogether. My people use magic, especially psionics, as their big thing, due to their biological limits stature and reach. As a result, I've come to rely too much on keeping distance with my weapons. If a monster gets too close, I'm basically finished."
