I feel like most people have chosen to kind of ignore this in opt of the dragons ruling over the world from the heavens. Though maybe green dragons are the most common dragon type and are in charge of the heavens with other dragons having specific roles. Ice dragons could be like secluded sages and red dragons could melt the metal and form the structures.

Plus the dragons rule from the heavens and the mythical beasts have domain over their islands which can lead to really cool dynamics and interactions. Some of those beasts can be unique subspecies of dragons as well.

My idea: Basically the mythical beasts can be subspecies of dragons or not and tend to watch over their island or be feared across it, sometimes they are singular and other times they live in packs with one being the soul whraiths found on ice islands that absorb the souls of passerbys to regain temporarily the warmth they lost after being trapped between the afterlife and this world that appear typically alone due to them fighting over the souls they try to steal and are made out of air ice and debris off of the ground.

WAIT. What if the dragons are all human magic-users who cast True Polymorph and BECAME dragons?
So, the only race IS humans, but some take the form of dragons.

I thought of that, too, but there's already a suggested backstory in Tyranny of Dragons where you're a Gold Dragon turned into a human. I don't know of any official source with a story like this. Fun that my first thought and yours turned out the same, though :)

Fair. I just like going beyond what's already been done.
For instance, when running Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, when the villain (a Blue Dragon Wyrmling) was performing a magical ritual using enchanted statues, I had the player's ally (a Bronze Dragon Wyrmling) crash into the statues when reduced to 0 HP. From that point onwards, anytime he was touched, I rolled on the Wild Magic Surge table. The basic idea is that he was infused with the power of the ritual but couldn't control it.

what if demons are creatures who live way deep down in the vast caves beneath the islands. they have pale skin and no eyes, but their appearance varies vasly beyond that. they're not really an afterlife, but they will kidnap surface creatures to eat them, or sacrifice them to their titanic, fungus-infused demon lords.
their famous chaos is because they function more on instinct than intelligince

a demon can become a fungus lord by going deep enough underground, and eating a specific kind of magical fungus that grows from the corpse of one of the first monsters, however, demons aren't smart enough/don't have enough language/are too individualistic to share this knowledge with any other demon

fungus lords can produce mind-affecting spores, which is the basis of the concept of demonic possession, infecting someone with a parasitic fungus, making them paler, photosensitive, and antisocial. they sprout more fungus when they die.
demons have their mutation rate cranked way up, making each demon completely unique, if not viable. evolution in hyper speed.
