So while scrolling my feeds I came across an app that on the surface looked pretty attractive. I won't name it here, but when I installed and tried it out it became pretty apparent it wasn't only made purely by AI but also run purely by AI. It barely even worked correctly.
But it wasn't a bad idea and based on the reviews it at least appeared on the surface to be something people want. But, it's hard to tell in this age of AI where a product can even go so far as to create thousands of fake reviews.
So, the idea was simple: what if your Orc Barbarian for Dungeons & Dragons had a Twitter account? What if you could designate a place for you and your friends to RP via social media without real world politics, brands, and whatever else interrupting your immersion?
I know, people already have their workarounds for this. Just use discord, or twitter, or a Facebook group, Tumblr, whatever. But the problem is that these are all purpose tools and are still bogged down with ads and in some cases, atrocious UI.
I'm a freelance developer but I have designed some platforms that are used by hundreds of thousands of users, transferring terabytes of data over the span of a day, in the blink of an eye. All painfully done solo except for a cyber security expert who helps me to keep my services secure.
My version would involve precisely zero AI, zero ads, zero real-world anything and would serve only the purpose of providing users a safe space to play their characters when they can't PLAY their characters.
This idea hasn't gone anywhere other than my own head yet so I'm still brainstorming most of the features, but so far it would work largely the same as other social media apps with a single caveat (for now); you would be restricted to playing whatever character you're using at that moment in the world you created them. This is to maintain full immersion and prevent things that would break it, such as your D&D character finding a One Piece character replying to their post about slaying Tiamat.
I've estimated based on my current schedule this would probably take me just under a year or so before I can push to production, but it there's not enough interest I may just pass on the idea.
So what do you all think? Scrap or no? Anything I'm missing? Anything I didn't mention you think such a service would need?
I could agree, this does actually sound like a good idea!
Go for it!
