Playing one character at a time limits creativity, I would say about three or five. so if you get stuck you can try again with a new character

I think you can only play 1 character at a time. Also, yes you can start with common/uncommon, and the level up magic item thing was exactly what I was thinking, thank you for putting it into words. There should be a magic item cap of 10, though, so you can’t have 20 at once.
