We live in an amazing age. The world is so connected through studies and the internet that previously-rare or taboo hobbies are becoming common. Arts like Kendo or Kenjutsu have been widespread for decades, but we are now seeing a massive rise of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). This includes weapon systems such as Longsword, Rapier, Sword and Buckler, Spear/Polearm, and many many more. Studies are done on ancient texts from masters and are studied worldwide.
My question is this: Is anyone here a HEMA practitioner? Is it something you just started or have been doing for a long time? How has it altered your perspective of fanciful things like movies or video games? If you did not know about HEMA until now, is it something that tou would like to try? It is surprisingly easy to jump into and study.

Never heard of HEMA, but I really enjoy trying to hit people with fake swords/axes/spears/whatever.
Have you ever heard of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)? From what I can tell, it's a bit more lore-focused than your HEMA.
The SCA is a more reenactment focused group, but combatives to play a role for those who want to display martial prowess. HEMA takes modern recreations of weapons (wood, metal, or synthetics) and says, "We can hit, but how did they do it 500 years ago?" It's like archeology in the way that Indiana Jones practices it.

Tooltips (Help/aid)
I have a number of friends that practice HEMA, as well as friends who are reenactors (some do both).
I've tried both HEMA and reenactment but, I prefer LARP. :)
