AD&D , Summer before 7th grade and my friend had played it at summer camp we gad a basic idea of how the game worked as we only had dice and nothing else , it was fun as we all had our own ideas of how we should do things but or DM at the time was a Psycho and kept having Dragons "Randomly" show up to try to kill us. Allowing my level 1 Wizard to use his catchphrase " I pee my pants and run like hell"
I think the first time for me was as a guest at a friends house where they played every so often. That was when I found out being a paladin did not let me kill people just because I felt like it. Who knew paladins had to be such nice guys, with scruples and things like that.
Later on actually played some more with a group of highschool friends using 3e/3.5e which was when I discovered I freakin hate psionics. At the same time it was rather fun even after people started stealing from each other, but not quite as much as they were stealing from every merchant in town. This of course ended with a dead merchant so they had to skip town.

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."

I was 4 when my 13 year old brother made me roll a d20 for the first time. Off and on through the next 4 years he took me through some of The Keep on the Borderlands, Castle Amber, and Slave Pits of the Undercity. My brother quit playing and I played a bit with friends through elementary, junior high, and high school. I started a campaign in college that is now going on its 21st year. Now 36 years later my brother has come back to the D&D fold and we're playing a remote 5e game. I started early, have never been too far away from it, and have made some of the best friends of my life through it.
The first time I played I had 9 characters and nearly got a TPK on the second encounter. My DM reversed time and explained that there were more options than just walking into a clearing filled with potentially hostile tribesmen.
The two of us played for a year or so, with a party of nine, and occasional assistance from his brother...great times. Not too much roleplaying, but man those D20s earned their keep!

I was in the fourth grade and the box didn't have dice, we had too tear paper into different cups. Great utility and fun to play with!
