Heroforge is a website that prints uncolored custom minis for a decent price. They just started a kickstarter to include 3D custom printed minis. The kickstarter launched yesterday and is already 1000%2000%3000% 4000% funded. As a backer for $40 you can get one printed mini as of June of this year I believe. I have nothing to do with the campaign, but thought this was too awesome not to share. And I searched the forum for it and couldn't find a similar post, so I thought I'd include it.
Heroforge is amazing, I backed this one right away. I have been a customer and fan of theirs since the first Kickstarter and they produce some really good stuff.
Heroforge is great if you have problems finding an accurate enough model for your PC or NPC and now there's an option to get one with a decent paint job? Yes, please! Colours seem accurate enough, for tabletop standards, and I think it will be easy enough to paint over it to sharpen some details, apply more contrast, etc. Definitely going to pledge enough for one or two models.
There's also an option for 3d painted or hand painted, and all of the stretch goals are releasing SO MANY more customization options it's crazy! I can't wait
HeroForge is cool in that you can customize, but for my tastes, their caricatures are exaggeratedly "cartoony." Painted or colored definitely doesn't appear worthwhile either at the price points. Even if I could forgive the models as they are, the 3d colored ones look horrible! Definitely encouraging the hand painted option, I guess. The handpainted ones look nice, colour-wise, but at $150 for kickstarter special....that's enough to put a good downpayment on a Prime1 statue. No thanks. I'll stick to the wiz kids minis and paint myself for better results at a fraction the cost if I feel like I really need more than I currently do.
It's certainly not for everyone, and the price point is a bit high. For me I love the company and the work they do so I'm backing it. There have been some concerns mentioned about the "chalkiness" look of the color printed models that they are addressing. I went in for two and I'll see how they come out before I commit to more in the future. From past experience with them though I've purchased around 10 of the existing version and they are great.
I do love designing concepts at Heroforge and hope to one day order, maybe even one of the colour renderings. My hesitation with most online ordering is factoring the currency conversion to CAD, some US sites only do free domestic shipping and then there are customs/ duty.
considering purchasing the download files If I can find a viable option in Canada but no rush. Still great for mockups.
